Home Away From Home

Hello all, welcome back!

As I write to you from my apartment here in Cape Town, South Africa, I am looking out my window towards one of the seven natural wonders of the world, Table Mountain.

I live in the Garden Center Apartments with one ~~fantastic~~ roommate who goes to Pitt like me.

The building sits near the city center and is brimming with locals who come to work, shop, and play.  This environment gives us more cultural exposure to the raw reality of living as a Capetownian.

While I am enjoying my stay here, there are several unexpected challenges I am not accustom to in the United States. For example even as students we have VERY limited access to wifi including emails and coursework which hinders our abilities to complete our tasks.

As an American tourist we are often targeted by pan-handelers who have unfortunately fallen prey to the negative results of class separation. Their misconception of Americans leads them to believe that we are all rich even though for most of us, as students, that is not the case.

So far I am having a great time in Cape Town. I love that this is exactly where I wanted to be. I wanted to visit a nonconventional country and have an experience in the third world.

Cheers!
