A sad hello as I am writing my final blog post from here in the down under. I cannot believe these six weeks have flown by – but time flies when you are having fun!
Coming into this trip, I really did not know what to expect regarding my internship that I was going to be placed in, my living arrangements, who I would meet in my weeks here, and just the city in general. However, every single day here was better than the next and I am truly sad that I have to leave this beautiful country.
My experience at my internship has been incredible. The group of women that were my supervisors were always extremely friendly, open to questions, and attentive on my experiences here in Sydney. Every Monday, we would all have a brief meeting to discuss the expectations and tasks that needed to be completed during this week. Each meeting would begin with everyone going around and saying how their weekend went and what plans we each had. These 20 minute meetings almost always went on to be 45 min to an hour just because of the casual conversation that ended up letting us lose track of time. In addition to the staff that I worked with, the tasks that I completed were extremely interesting and fun (most of the time). I could not have asked for a more perfect company to be an intern at.
The class that I took here in Sydney was Operations Management with the infamous GG who travelled from Pitt to simply just be our professor. Our class had a total of 6 people in it which allowed all of us to become very close friends and made the class more enjoyable than your standard business core class. Also, this small class size allowed us to really understand the material in a personal setting. In attending both Syracuse University and Pitt, I had yet to encounter a class where the professor knew every student’s name – until here in Sydney. Plus, there is an added bonus that the other 5 students are also from Pitt so I will hopefully have future classes with a few of them!
Some days I actually had to remind myself that I am living 10,000 miles away on the other side of the world because it had become so comfortable. Riding the train or catching a bus was second nature, I became accustomed to the different neighborhoods and sections of the city, and I even started picking up on local slang for different items or phrases.
This experience was an absolutely amazing experience that I don’t think any future trip/vacation will ever top. Being able to live in a new place for an extended period of time and actually being able to embrace a culture and not just see the typical tourist attractions has been really eye-opening and very cool. Ever since I was little I had always wanted to come to Australia and I certainly was not disappointed.
Well Australia, it’s been real! Thank you for some of the greatest and craziest experiences of my entire life. I will be back very soon I promise 🙂
