Sarah The American Ambassador

One habit that I have noticed with the Spanish people is they do not hold back.  They also look at me as an ambassador to America.  Once they met me, they didn’t wait very long until asking me anything and everything about America.

One of the first questions that I had was “Is Philadelphia like the Fresh Prince of Belair??  You look like Miley Cyrus!!  Or Selena Gomez!! FYI, I look like neither of those people, but if there’s a famous woman that sort of looks like you from America, you might be compared to them.  I think this was there was of trying to build a bridge.  A bridge of friendship maybe.  I really am not sure, but I think they wanted to show me that they can relate to me or talk with me about an aspect of American pop culture.  Which, I did appreciate the effort!

Another thing I get asked about a lot is comparisons.  So, when I mentioned high school, they asked me if it was just like high school musical with the cliques and groups.  And then when they found out I had a boyfriend they asked me if I was a cheerleader and if he was a football player.  When I unfortunately let them down with a no….they proceeded to tell me it was okay, but then followed up with a “But does it actually happen??”

Why do you use inches and feet??  Why do you use Fahrenheit??  Why do you use miles and not Kilometers?  Why does your clock repeat itself?  Why do you use lbs instead of Kgs?  I honestly have never been more ready to honestly say that I do not know!!

The last and worst topic they bring up it…..you guessed it…Politics!  I can’t even begin to describe how much I hate this!!  Everyday when Trump does something on the news, I go into work and they ask, “Hey, have you seen the faces of the children that Trump is separating from their families??  I can show you!”  The idea of a popular vote vs an electoral college vote confuses them.  Frankly it confuses me too!

I enjoy being able to represent my country, my school, my family, and myself well.  Although, it can get really frustrating after a while, I always try to keep a col head about myself.  After all, how many times have I asked for help her?  Innumerable!
