Google, Company Culture, and….Chickens

Today’s visit to Google was unlike any company culture I’ve ever seen. The company has, by far, the most laid back company culture I’ve ever experienced, not to mention the hard-to-believe benefits they offer on each floor of their facility. It was usual, but almost expected from a company whose success had reached the magnitude of Google’s. The strength of the ties between employee and employer seems secure because of such a work environment.

I think Googlers are unique to employees in other places. The freedom of fostering individuality, the flexibility of schedule, and the company’s unique culture all stems from the financial security blanket that comes from Google’s unbelievable success. This success allows Google have amenities such as massage areas, incredible office spaces, and…..chickens.

Google Pittsburgh is a very self-aware company. From today’s visit, I got the sense Google realizes what an economic force they are and has assume a sense of responsibility in their community. They developed a wifi network for the Bakery Square area residents and they do a lot of work for young entrepreneurs in the region. This was somewhat surprising, considering Google’s worldwide presence, but it also seemed like a natural way for them to be integrated into the Pittsburgh area.

Google found this participation valuable. This relates to stakeholder management and the open systems theory because a company that wants to be successful needs to respond to their environment, its influences, and its members in positive way. By engaging with their community members they establish a healthy and positive working environment to grow their business.
