Emerging Area of Information Systems (IS) That You Are Familiar With: Based on the IS-related areas that are identified in these slides, identify one specific emerging area of IS that you already have familiarity and experience with. What is the value added by this area of IS?
A major evolving area of information services that I am already familiar with is mobile banking. Within this area of financial services, the ability to not only connect with a financial institution from virtually anywhere, but also make investments, conduct financial transactions, and manage accounts from anywhere. Personally, I use a variety of different mobile banking options. I cash all the checks I receive through mobile deposit and move money between accounts from my phone. I also have mobile access to my Schwab portfolio and retirement account, both of which can be manipulated from my phone. For my business, I do the majority of my financial transactions through PayPal, which allows users to send and receive money from the mobile platform. The value added by this area of IS is pure convenience. People no longer have to travel to a bank to deposit a check or open up a new account. Mobile banking allows users to access their money virtually anywhere, a versatile tool that can be utilized in both the business and personal settings.
Emerging Area of Information Systems (IS) That You Are Less Familiar With/Would Like to Learn More: Based on the IS-related areas that are identified in these slides, identify one specific emerging area of IS that you are less familiar with, but would like to learn more/gain experience with. What is the value-added by this area of IS?
One area I am less familiar with within IS is cyber security. As society transitions to a more digital age, the threat of cyber attacks is imminent, as valuable information and personal data is being stored online. This opens up an entirely new profession of cyber security, an emerging occupation I’ve always had a slight interest in. It is hard to predict what technological advances will be developed in the future, however current technological advance suggests the necessity of cyber security. The value added by this area of IS is safety and peace of mind. With the implementation of cyber security, consumers don’t have to worry about their personal information being stolen. On a greater scale, cyber attacks on government institutions could pose a threat of national security, and cyber security is a necessary combatant to these attacks.
Other Examples Like This?: Based on the IS-related material that you see in these slides, what specific areas do you likely to see as a big part of your career and professional development (i.e. where do you want to gain experience in internships and your first jobs)?
A major component of IS is big data and the various digital analytical tactics companies use to make decisions based on data. All four slides incorporated something regarding the manipulation of big data and I believe that these types of tools will be valuable for me later in my professional development. This also ties into artificial intelligence, as the use of AI could be present in analyzing big data, as well as future career opportunities.
