Vertucci – July 17 – Shared Value

Shared Value – People/Planet/Profit:  The shared value approach to analysis for business decision-makers has a conceptual focus through perspectives like the “Triple Bottom Line” – in which a manager reviews how a business model addresses issues of People, Planet and Profit.  Based on what you see in the 55 second video on Thread International, how is Thread’s business model reflective of People, Planet and Profit:

The company Thread International is based on the basic principle that people working together can benefit the earth while making money. Thread values the communities from which the waste is collected and the natural environment as much as, or more than, the actual profits of the business. In doing so, Thread focuses on the Triple Bottom Line.

Shared Value – Social/Economic/Environmental :  The shared value perspective to analysis for business decision-makers through measurement approaches like documenting Social Sustainability, Economic Sustainability and Environmental Sustainability.  Based on what you see in the 55 second video on Thread International (also on the website), how does Thread International demonstrate its impact in one (or more) of these areas:

Thread International demonstrates sustainability in a social, economic, and environmental sense. Social sustainability is seen through the way impoverished nations are eager to help the business ventures. Kelsey Halling shared a little about the people in Haiti being enthusiastic when discovering recycled materials can be turned into profitable thread. Thread International certainly impacted the communities in a positive way. In addition, Thread provides income opportunities, in turn aiding the economy. Over 3800 job opportunities have been generated in Taiwan, Honduras, and Haiti since 2012. Arguably, the most important impact Thread makes is on the environment. The products are manufactured from recycled materials, and the consumers are even encouraged to return their apparel to Thread when the product is no longer in use (the raw materials can be recycled again). Therefore, Thread International is an excellent example for social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

Other Examples Like This?:  As a future manager facing complex environments, where do you see the utility of either of these approaches to shared value in your future work?

In my opinion, sustainability is extremely important. The example that Thread International sets is inspiring because the business is socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable. In the future, I can imagine more companies modeling their business after this Triple Bottom Line philosophy. Communities, economies, and the earth will benefit, and the companies can still be profitable.
