My mother’s parents are named James and Diana. Her mother, Diana, was born in 1944 in Glassport, PA, and her father, James, was born in 1946 in Carnegie, PA. My father’s parents are named David and Pamela. His mother, Pamela, was born in 1952 in Youngstown, OH, and his father, David, was born in 1950 in Youngstown, OH. I have always been interested in my mother’s grandfather, Nunzio. Nunzio was an Italian immigrant but moved to the US at a very young age in the early 1900s, and his family settled in Pittsburgh. His story is very interesting because although his parents were of Italian descent and spoke fluently, he and his siblings were forbidden from speaking Italian because their parents wanted them to assimilate into the culture. He fought for the Allied Powers in Europe in World War II, but never once spoke about the war to my mother or grandmother, so that part of our history is not well known. Another very interesting ancestor that I have on my mother’s side in some relation is Cavalry Officer William Selby Harney, who fought with the US army in the Indian Wars and the Mexican American Wars. Unfortunately, Harney was the proprietor of a lot of hate and violence toward Native Americans, so our family is not proud to call him our ancestor.
