Earlier today, we bused to Kilmainham Gaol, a historical monument for Dublin. The structure served as a jail in the past and has a lot of history. The prison held thieves, beggars, and powerful political figures like Eamon Valera and Edward Daly. I really enjoyed hearing the stories of prisoners. For example, Joseph Plunkett was set to be executed the next day, but was allowed to marry his fiancé. They only had ten minutes to talk after the ceremony under supervision of the guards. The wedding ring, proposal letter, and pictures of the couple were on display in the museum. Stories just bring history to life and it’s amazing.
After Kilmainham Gaol, we took a bus to Howth, an Irish fishing village. In Howth, we walked around the weekend market where there were food, jewelry, and souvenir vendors. Then, we started the hike up the coast and climbed to the top of the mountain where the views were breathtaking. When we went back down the mountain, we got fish and chips for dinner and then went home. Overall, it was a great sightseeing day in Dublin and Howth.
