Last Day Before the Trek

Today was an excellent point for the group. We all came together to discuss the trek and our individual goals. We established the system of multiple teams for the trek to better manage group morale and will consistently change the teams so each person can interact with each other. I am very much looking forward to the sunset tomorrow and am happy with the group performance so far.

Regarding cultural norms, the feedback in India has been very direct, unlike the West. Our instructors and guides are quick to tell us what we are doing wrong and what we are doing correctly. This feedback works very well for me as I do not have much experience in WAFA, hiking, or backpacking. I am happy to take a step back, observe my peers and guides, and think about what makes them successful. True leaders should always accept active followership. The need to have the best idea or provide input in every discussion will lead to not fully developed thoughts and may lead to the group’s detriment. As a follower, one will be able to understand their teammates more and practice their servant leadership. One who is not privy to servant leadership may automatically not consider that person a leader when they should. During my first hike, I stepped in when I was needed and was a follower as I felt ill-equipped in my knowledge of hiking; luckily, I was able to push myself and felt accomplished in the end.

In the upcoming hike, I am looking forward to seeing how the group dynamic develops. Over the past few days, everyone has grown closer and more trusting, and the hike will only expand upon this. As we are currently in the Storming stage, I look forward to coming together in times of stress and reaching the performing stage. Truthfully, I am a little concerned about my ability to continue trekking. While I have never been on a 10-day hike before, this truly is my trial by fire. My mind is ready to take on any challenge, but I need to be better at listening to my body in order to stay smart and safe. I am also a little concerned about my cooking skills, but I have kind and helpful teammates to help combat my anxieties. Overall, I am very excited and cannot wait for the group’s upcoming exhibition in the Himalayas.
