Creating Change, Personally: My Impact in Puerto Rico

Hello! I’m a Bryanna Alandar, a first generation college student and a junior at the University of Pittsburgh, pursuing a dual major in Finance and Business Information Systems. Outside of my academic endeavors, I work as a sales merchandiser at Marshalls. Additionally, I contribute to the UPMC team as a hospitality associate, which allows me to explore the diverse and important field of healthcare hospitality. I was adopted from China and grew up in Enola, PA. These experiences have shaped my worldview and instilled in me a deep appreciation for diversity and cultural understanding. As I navigate both my academic and professional pursuits, I am excited about the opportunities for growth and learning that each day brings.

From a young age, my passion has driven me to give back, participating in missionary trips and volunteering. This program stood out to me as a catalyst for personal, academic, and professional growth. My decision to participate in this Global Service Learning program stems from a transformative experience I had during a mission trip to New Orleans, Louisiana, where I dedicated a week to assisting those affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This impactful encounter ignited a profound sense of purpose and a commitment to continued service, prompting me to seek further opportunities to contribute to communities in need.

The mission trip to New Orleans exposed me to the tangible impact that collective efforts could have on the lives of individuals grappling with the aftermath of a natural disaster. My academic goals include engagement in meaningful research projects to contribute to the body of knowledge in the finance industry and enhance critical thinking skills and immersing myself in diverse cultural and academic experiences through study abroad programs to broaden my global perspective and understanding. While professionally, I aspire to be a business analyst and a consultant embodies a commitment to continuous learning and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. On a personal level, this experience serves as a chance to broaden my perspective, enhance cultural understanding, and contribute meaningfully to a community in need.

Caras con Causa, a non-profit organization rooted in the heart of Cataño, Puerto Rico, has been a beacon of positive change since its establishment in 2004. Initially conceived with a global perspective, the organization’s evolution under the guidance of Executive Director Michael Fernandez reflects a commitment to delving into the specific needs of the local communities in Cataño and Guaynabo. The organization’s commitment to nurturing holistic development at the grass roots level is epitomized by the overarching vision of “a just sustainable Puerto Rico where we reach our maximum potential.”

Leading the charge in Caras con Cause’s endeavors is the LabCom project, a vibrant laboratory focused on preserving the ecosystems within the Cienega Las Cucharillas Natural Reserve. These wetlands and mangroves hold profound significance for the communities in the San Juan metropolitan area, serving as ecological treasures that contribute to the overall well-being of the region. LabCom stands as a testament to the organization’s holistic approach, intertwining community development, education, and ecology to address multifaceted challenges.

Local schools currently leverage LabCom as an educational resource, providing students with hands-on experiences to learn about the impact of climate change on their community. The laboratory serves as a platform for environmental research, empowering students to actively engage with the challenges and opportunities presented by their surroundings.

The specific scope of the project involves assessing the feasibility of a groundbreaking business venture: offering LabCom access to university students and professors from the United States. This strategic initiative aims to transform the laboratory into a hub for global service-learning, where visiting students and educators can study the wetlands while being hosted by Caras con Causa.

By opening its doors to universities in the United States, Caras con Causa seeks to create a sustainable funding stream that can significantly contribute to the organization’s ongoing community development initiatives. This collaborative endeavor, rooted in environmental conservation and community engagement, holds the promise of creating a ripple effect of positive change locally, globally, and within the hearts and minds of those involved.

In essence, Caras con Causa’s LabCom project represents a transformative model of community development, education, and environmental stewardship. It is a beacon of hope, fostering a connection between local communities and global learners, all while advancing the organization’s mission to propel Puerto Rico toward a future of justice, sustainability, and boundless potential.

Participating in the Global Service Learning program in Puerto Rico was a decision deeply rooted in my desire to make a meaningful impact while simultaneously broadening my personal and professional horizons. Several compelling factors led to the choice of this specific program, each contributing to the overall sense of purpose and fulfillment.

The Global Service Learning program presented an opportunity to actively participate in the ongoing recovery and contribute to the restoration of a community that has faced significant challenges. The cultural richness and diversity of Puerto Rico also played a pivotal role in my decision. The chance to immerse myself in a vibrant and unique culture, distinct from my own, promised not only personal enrichment but also an opportunity to cultivate a deeper understanding of the community I would be serving.

In addition to the personal and cultural dimensions, there is a professional motivation behind my choice. The Global Service Learning program offers a unique opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge gained in academic settings to real-world situations. The skills acquired through active participation in community development projects, cross-cultural communication, and collaborative problem-solving are invaluable assets for anyone aspiring to work in diverse and dynamic professional environments.

Ultimately, participating in the Global Service Learning program to Puerto Rico is a manifestation of my commitment to global citizenship and social responsibility. It is a step towards becoming an active agent of positive change, fostering sustainable development, and contributing to the well-being of communities facing challenges beyond their control. The decision to engage in this program is not just a choice; it is a journey towards personal, academic, and professional growth through service, cultural exchange, and a shared commitment to making the world a better place.
