Dear Pre-Departure Gwen,
I understand the stress you’re feeling about going abroad and leaving almost everything you know behind, but trust me, it’ll all work out in the end. It is going to be such a rewarding experience filled with personal growth.
As you’ve traveled and connected with people from various backgrounds, you’ve undoubtedly become more self-aware – noticing how you interact, think, and present yourself to the world. This newfound self-awareness has fueled a sense of confidence in who you are and where you’re headed in life/where you want to go.
Looking back, there are things I wish I’d known from the beginning, like silly (practical) tips on packing or overcoming initial worries about making friends. But the most important lesson I’ve learned is not to worry too much about adjusting to life in France or managing the workload. Take it slow, and you’ll realize that it’s perfectly fine to take time for yourself, to recharge and relax. Whether you’re managing assignments or socializing with new friends, being mindful of how you spend your time will come more naturally than you think.
I know that a little over four months away from family and friends seems like a scary experience, and in the beginning it definitely is a bit, but looking back it’s all going to go faster than you expect. The most surprising part though is how much you’re going to experience and learn in such a short period. You have gotten to explore both Marseille and other countries, build relationships with people on your program, and strengthen your relationships back home. Most importantly you have learned how fun it can be to step out of your comfort zone.
While you’ve always been comfortable spending time alone, going on a solo trip boosted your confidence and revealed new aspects of your personality. Yes, you still planned every day thoroughly (even down to the outfits you’d wear), but you became so flexible with how you spent your time and made a friend at the hostel you stayed at. Thanks to this friendship, you’ve not only broadened your perspectives but also gained a friend to visit in Munich, Germany!
It’s scary to know that you’ll never be able to fully prepare for what’s to come, so just try your best to embrace it and remember to keep an open mind. I’m already so proud of how far you’ve come and can’t wait for the memories you’ll make.
Au revoir,
Future Gwen
