Man, it is hard to believe that it has already been a week since I left for Dublin. So much has happened this past week as I met so many great people, saw so many cool places and events, and experienced so much of Ireland and Dublin’s culture. Outside of my experiences in the city of Dublin, I have also seen the towns of Kilkenny and Glendalough which were great cities and that I had a great time in. I have also learned a lot more about Irish culture as a whole as I have learned how to play Irish sports like Gaelic Football and Hurling, experienced more Irish music, and met many different Irish locals. This week has also helped me adjust and become more prepared for my internship that starts this upcoming week as it helped me get over the jet lag and made this place feel more like living at home. Still, I am very much looking forward to my upcoming internship this week and feel like it will be an unforgettable and life-changing experience. Starting this week, I will be working as the finance intern for a music venue and bar called The Grand Social. I am incredibly excited for this internship as music is one of my passions and I really hope that this experience will allow me to incorporate music and my other passions into my career and future jobs after college. The Grand Social is one of Dublin’s most popular music venues and has hosted many different successful concerts. In addition to their concerts, the venue has also had many successful comedians, parties, and many other live events.
One of the skills that I feel would be important is creativity. Music tastes are very trendy and venues like The Grand Social must be creative in who they schedule for events, when they schedule events, and how they promote these events to grow their business and increase the profit of the venue. As for me and the finance side of the business, I will need to be creative in how I help the venue increase their revenue from various events overall, while also finding a way to keep costs for events and the overall venue down. Another way that I can express my creativity during this internship is through how things are processed and used within the business of the venue, finding ways to speed up processes, and improving how the day-to-day business in the office works. I also feel like I could use my creativity to help with promoting and marketing various events, and the venue itself. One of the most effective ways that I feel that I could help with this is through social media. I have good experience with using social media and could greatly help the venue promote their events and their venue more through the medium of social media.
Another skill that I think is extremely important for this industry is adaptability as there are many instances where artists have to cancel, or events do not produce as much revenue as they should have. Again, this is a skill that I have lots of experience with. My previous internship with my soccer club Eagle FC last summer was also in an industry where people need to be adaptable in order to increase profit/revenue and grow the business. As with that internship, I feel like I could really be helpful in helping The Grand Social adapt and overcome various challenges and obstacles like canceled events, slow processing, and more. With the finance side of the business, lack of information and stagnant info processing can cause many issues within the business and can force people to make uninformed decisions will heavily impact the revenue and costs of the business. I could help the venue with these types of issues by finding ways to discover new information about different artists, music trends, and more while also helping my supervisor make decisions that will impact our future revenue and profit.
All in all, this week has been incredibly fun, and I am really glad that I was able to meet so many great people, make so many new and great friends, and see so many interesting places. I am also really looking forward to seeing what my first week at my internship will be like. I have experience in a similar industry to the one that my internship will be in, so I feel that I can make an impact there and have a great time as well.
