Assimilating into London culture

A great part of London’s culture is its nightlife. That is one of the things I like the best about being in this city. Everywhere you go, no matter what time it is, the streets are always bustling with activity. I have only been in this city for three weeks, and it is very exciting to see locals celebrating for no occasion and having a great time. Regarding its “deep culture,” I never truly understood how much Londoners loved to go out and socialize until I came here. There are pubs on every corner of the street, and people would come out and have a drink with friends as early as the afternoon.

However, pubs are not just places to purchase alcohol but also to bring family and children. I had a hard time understanding this as every time I come across a pub, it always takes me by surprise to sometimes see young children inside. Then, I would be reminded that it is normal for pubs to be for everyone, not just for adults; I am just used to equating pubs to bars. On that note, it is not uncommon for supervisors and colleagues of all ages to go out together after work. In America, it is very rare for coworkers to invite each other out. However, the more friendly atmosphere of the English workplace makes it easy for these things to happen. It took time for me to assimilate into this social aspect of London culture. When my supervisor mentions going out together as a company, I always found it shocking yet exciting because it is a new experience, different from America.

At my workplace, I got to know my English coworker, who is only 17! She was very friendly and open to meeting us American interns. She shared stories of living as a Londoner and recommendations for things to do and see. This relates to how the English workplace is much more slow-paced and friendly than an American workplace; everyone is charming, and it is a nice change. I find it easier to open up and speak as friendly colleagues. I want to adopt this characteristic into my work attitude to create a warm environment back in America. I believe this can make me more productive and comfortable in the office space!
