As I reflect on my journey through my international marketing course and my internship at Better Design Digital and Anythink in London, I’ve developed a variety of skills. Some are technical, some are those elusive “soft” skills everyone talks about, but all of them are incredibly valuable.
One of the most crucial soft skills I’ve honed is communication. Whether it was pitching our innovative product features to potential clients at London Tech Week (enjoy the picture of my boss in an F1 simulator!) or crafting compelling sales proposals, I learned that communication is more than just speaking. It’s about making your ideas stick. Rather than having someone hear you, it’s important for them to truly listen and remember your company.
Interning at a small tech company means wearing many hats and collaborating closely with a tight-knit team. My experience at Better Design Digital and Anythink taught me the importance of teamwork. We had our share of creative differences– let’s just say the debate over the layout for our new business cards was intense — but we always found a middle ground. It was a lesson in diplomacy and open mindedness, qualities that are indispensable in any professional setting.
In terms of hard skills, through both my coursework and hands-on experience, I’ve gained a solid understanding of various marketing techniques. This includes SEO research, social media strategy, and developing comprehensive marketing plans. These skills are fundamental for any marketing professional and have provided me with a strong foundation to build upon in my career.
I have also had the chance to improve my design skills. Strengthening brand identity with professionally designed business cards and promotional materials was a crash course in visual appeal. I dived into the world of design software, learning the nuances of creating eye-catching and effective marketing material. It wasn’t just about looking good; it was about making a lasting impression.
The confidence I’ve gained from pitching to seasoned professionals and the creativity nurtured through developing marketing strategies are assets that will serve me well in any personal or professional endeavor. Standing in front of a crowd and presenting a company I had known for just over a week was a challenge, but each pitching experience I gain makes the next one easier than the last. Learning how to communicate effectively is a soft skill I can continue to use and sharpen for the rest of my life. Academically, these experiences have bridged the gap between theory and practice. Understanding marketing concepts in the classroom is one thing, but applying them in the real world is where true learning happens.
In conclusion, my internship in London has been a whirlwind of learning, growth, and occasional chaos. But through it all, I’ve developed a strong set of transferable skills that will propel me toward my personal, professional, and academic goals. Here’s to more adventures, more learning, and hopefully, fewer debates over business card layouts. Cheers!
