Goodbye Ireland, Hello America

In what seems like no time at all, I am already back home to my house in America. My time abroad flew by, but I am very grateful for this opportunity and everything I was able to see and do because of it. I traveled to countries I never thought I would go to, made many new friends, and had an invaluable working experience at my professional placement that helped prepare me for a future career in law. During this past week at my program, I made it a point to make the most of it by spending my last few days with my friends. Every day after work, we made plans to spend time with each other and enjoy the unique experiences Dublin has to offer before we would all go our separate ways back home for the rest of the summer. It was sad to say goodbye to coworkers and friends. Still, I am thankful for the time we got to spend with each other, and I will always remember this summer as one of the best experiences I have had in my life and a defining moment of my college experience.

Working at Daly Khurshid Solicitors as an intern gave me firsthand experience of what it is like working in an international environment. Every country has its unique values relative to their culture and place, differences that are never truly appreciated until you immerse yourself in them. Despite this, I found that success at my internship is no different than how success is defined in a typical American firm or company. Since I worked for a solicitor, the person responsible for offering various legal advice to clients and preparing cases in court for barristers to represent said clients, they have similar goals to any American lawyer in this respect. We try to satisfy our client’s wishes by resolving their legal issues and ensuring that they get the outcome they want in court from the barristers we hire to speak and represent the client on our behalf. Achieving this satisfies our client’s wishes, raises the reputation of the firm, and draws new clients into our business, all the goals that define success at the firm and ensure that the firm will continue to prosper and grow in the future.

Without successful employees, no firm or business can achieve success. The whole is the sum of its parts, and, especially in a legal setting, a strong team of highly motivated individuals is essential to success in a highly competitive field such as law. Working at Daly Khurshid Solicitors, I was lucky enough to be surrounded by such individuals and foster meaningful relationships with them both in and outside the office. Everyone there was always very busy, constantly keeping themselves occupied with their client’s needs and the copious amount of paperwork necessary for legal proceedings. Time management is a crucial skill that is foundational for the success of any employee in the firm, whether that be Patricia working the phones or administrative requirements or Gary Daly and Imran Khurshid running the show as the qualified barristers and partners of the firm. As an intern, I had the least amount of responsibility, but even so, I still had to manage my time effectively and consistently seek out work from my supervisors to make sure that I was doing my own part for the success of the firm.

Based on my experience, there is no difference in behavior for successful employees in Ireland and America. Law, although different from country to country, always has the same goal and similar skills from place to place. The essence of the legal profession transcends geographical boundaries. The fundamental principles of justice, client service, and ethical practice remain consistent. This realization has broadened my perspective and reinforced my passion for pursuing a career in law.

My internship at Daly Khurshid Solicitors was not just about learning the technical aspects of law but also about understanding the human element involved in legal practice. The personal interactions with clients, the empathy required to handle sensitive cases, and the dedication to achieving just outcomes are universal attributes of successful legal professionals. These experiences have taught me that the practice of law is not just about the statutes and regulations; it’s about people and their lives.

One of the most enlightening aspects of my time at Daly Khurshid was observing how legal professionals navigate the complexities of different legal systems. While the fundamental goal of achieving justice remains the same, the methodologies and procedures can vary significantly. This diversity in practice has equipped me with a more versatile skill set and a greater appreciation for the adaptability required in the legal profession.

In addition to the professional growth, my time in Dublin allowed me to experience a vibrant and culturally rich city. Dublin’s history, its literary heritage, and its lively social scene provided a perfect backdrop for my internship. From exploring the historic Trinity College and the Book of Kells to enjoying traditional Irish music sessions in local pubs, every moment was a blend of learning and enjoyment. These cultural experiences enriched my understanding of the context in which the legal system operates and gave me a more holistic view of the society I was serving.

Moreover, the friendships I formed during my time in Dublin have been invaluable. My colleagues and I bonded over shared challenges and successes, creating a support network that extended beyond the workplace. These relationships have provided me with a global network of friends and professionals that I can rely on throughout my career. The camaraderie and mutual respect we developed will undoubtedly influence my approach to teamwork and collaboration in my future endeavors.

Returning home, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and a deep appreciation for the opportunity I had. This experience has not only prepared me for my future career but also shaped my personal growth in profound ways. The lessons I learned, the skills I acquired, and the memories I made will stay with me for a lifetime. This summer in Dublin has been a defining chapter in my life, one that has set the foundation for my journey ahead in the field of law.

In conclusion, my time abroad was an extraordinary adventure that surpassed all my expectations. It was a journey of professional development, cultural immersion, and personal growth. The experiences I had and the people I met have left an indelible mark on me. As I embark on the next phase of my career, I carry with me the knowledge, skills, and friendships that will guide me towards success. This summer was not just a chapter in my college experience; it was a pivotal moment that has shaped the person I am today and the lawyer I aspire to become.
