Introduction: My First Week in London!

Hello! My name is Lauren Mucciola, I’m a rising junior studying Marketing with a certificate in Digital Marketing. I’m currently participating in the Global Business Institute in London, where I’ll be participating in a digital marketing internship with a local England based business in addition to taking a class!

Making the decision of where to travel to this summer was a tough one, but something about the city of London truly called to me with its wide variety offerings in the arts and music (I’m a huge Beatles and Rolling Stones Fan – so this persuaded me!) I also plan to work in a city as a postgraduate in the marketing field, and living in London would give me firsthand experience working in and navigating a large-scale city. I also wanted to gain an internship experience this summer, which the London GBI provided! It seemed like the perfect choice.

The internship I was assigned was for a small based pharmaceutical consulting and training agency called Setax. In this internship, I expect to expand my skills in creating marketing campaigns, digital content, and analyzing marketing strategies. This heavily aligns with my future goals in the marketing field, and I am super excited to officially start! I officially go into the office this week, and I can’t wait to meet my supervisors and gain insightful and hands-on experience in something I’m so passionate about!

I am also taking a class called Analyzing and Exploring the Global City: London. I’ve only had one week of classes at this point, but I have a feeling that I’ll love the class! As a marketing major, I don’t get to take many history courses anymore, so being able to take this class is a great opportunity for me. Our class is a hybrid of classroom work and lecture and outside guided exploration with our professor. This makes the course even more interesting – we get to learn about the history of London and then actually see these neighborhoods and landmarks in person!

From this global experience, I hope to gain hard and soft skills in the marketing and business world and learn about working in a small company environment, especially one different than those I might be used to in the states. I also hope to use this time to help me learn how to independently navigate and live in a city and determine if I’d enjoy this lifestyle in the future postgraduate! In my class, I hope to gain a better understanding of the history of such a historic city as London and understand why and how it is considered a global city, and if that status still stands.

I am so incredibly excited for my journey and time abroad, and can’t wait to make the most out of this once in a lifetime opportunity.
