Hi! My name is Sophie McGrann and I am studying abroad in Sydney through the Global Business Institute this summer!
I am originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania and am a rising Junior at Pitt. I am pursuing a double degree in the College of Business Administration and the College of General Studies, where I am majoring in Business Analytics and Media and Professional Communications. Outside of class, I am involved in Alpha Kappa Psi, a professional business fraternity, and Chi Omega, a social sorority.
Australia is somewhere that I’ve always been interested in traveling to and the GBI was the perfect opportunity for me to visit. I wanted to take a step outside of my comfort zone and visit somewhere that I might not have the chance to visit another time in my life. I am excited to explore the unique wildlife, beaches, and urban setting of Sydney.
I hope to gain an invaluable experience being so far away from home and meeting people from all around the world. I am looking forward to an unforgettable 6 weeks in Australia. I am taking two classes while I am in Sydney: “Environmental Debates” and “Analyzing the City: Sydney.” These classes are going to be a great way to fulfill Gen Ed credits while learning about really interesting topics. I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the area that I am traveling to through my classes and immerse myself in Australian history and culture.
After almost 30 hours of travel, I arrived in Australia last Thursday and have been here for 4 days so far! There are students from universities across the United States on our program, which has been another great way to meet new people! I can already tell that I am going to learn so much from this experience. Sydney is a massive city and there are so many places to visit and things to experience. The first few days here have been a little rainy, since it is turning into winter here. That didn’t hinder things, as we’ve had the chance to go on a Tribal Warrior Cruise and explore different neighborhoods throughout Sydney. I have already been to 2 beautiful beaches and seen many amazing sunsets. I am really interested in the Aboriginal history and culture throughout Australia and hope to learn more throughout my time here. All of the local residents have been extremely friendly and have provided advice for my trip and places to visit!
Overall, I can’t wait to explore Australia more and am looking forward to the rich experience that the GBI is providing me with!
