Sydney Bound!

Hi! My name is Tessa Muldowney and I am a rising junior in the College of Business Administration, majoring in Marketing and Business Information Systems, minoring in Economics, and getting a certificate in Leadership & Ethics. At Pitt, I’m involved in Phi Gamma Nu and Women in Business. I’m originally from the Washington, D.C. area.

I’m super excited to have the opportunity to participate in the Global Business Institute and study abroad in Sydney, Australia! I chose this program because I felt that visiting Australia was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and one that I may never get the chance to experience again. I also felt that Sydney perfectly combines a big city and beautiful natural landscapes. Between the unique architecture and stunning beaches, I am so excited to explore!

I have so many goals for this program and in the short four days I’ve been here, I can already see myself fulfilling them. I feel that this program will allow me to grow professionally, academically, and socially.

Professionally, I am interning at Intelligence Assist, an AI consulting company for small and midsized businesses. My professional goals include both transferable skills that combine my majors, which will be invaluable to me in the future. In my role as a Marketing Innovation Assistant, I get the unique opportunity to use AI tools to power productive marketing, in both internal and external settings. Furthermore, I want to use this time to become a more open-minded professional. I believe I will achieve this goal over the next six weeks. I’m thrilled to work in a new environment, gaining international perspectives and learning about a variety of cultures.

In addition, I am so excited to be taking a Sports Marketing course while I am here. I get the opportunity to learn in an international setting with students from universities all across the United States. Sports make up a big part of the culture in Sydney, and I can’t wait to get first-hand opportunities to learn about a variety of new sports, such as Australian Rules Football. My class is even going on a field trip to an Australian Football League game to see this new sport. I hope to use what I learn in this sports-related context to further develop my marketing knowledge!

This program is amazing because it will allow me to meet so many students from across the United States, as well as hopefully meet many locals! These new social experiences will help me step out of my comfort zone. I’m excited for the friendships to come, and I hope to see as many beaches, eat at as many new restaurants, and see new animals!

I am now accustomed to the time change in Sydney and could not be more excited for what is to come!
