My name is Ian Donnelly, and I’m from New Castle, Pennsylvania. I’m an incoming freshman at the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in finance, a field that I have been drawn to since childhood. This love of finance began with my dad. Since I can remember, he has always taken the time to discuss ideas and new topics with me, specifically finance. This influential yet straightforward story is where my passion began and has blossomed into what I am today. I’m a presidents list scholar at Butler County Community College (BC3). I run a Substack where I post my political commentary on my ideas, policies, and responses to current issues. Ultimately, my goal is to become a politician to represent Pennsylvania and the United States on the world stage.
Outside of school, I’m a dedicated brother and recreational athlete. During high school, I was on the golf team, and since then, I have continued to play casually with my brother, Frank, and my dad. Another passion of mine is playing soccer. Although I haven’t played on a team in years, as my high school didn’t have one, I still play and practice with my brother regularly. As I am in college now, I am still his number one supporter. He is a better player than I was, and I think being an older brother, albeit the one who pushed him around from time to time, made him stronger as a player and a person.
I chose the Pitt Global Haller Fellowship in Ireland because I thrive in collaborative environments. From my golf team to my time working at Walmart, I’ve learned what it means to be a part of a team. At Walmart, I interact with different people from all walks of life, from the former military to the disabled. It has been an excellent opportunity to see firsthand how teamwork and genuine connection can transcend backgrounds. I believe that my previous experiences have prepared me well for this program. This fellowship provides me with the opportunity to further develop my skills in international collaboration, preparing me for public leadership, which I aspire to be one day.
A great plus for this trip is that Ireland has always been a place I wanted to visit. My great-great-grandfather John E. Donnelly emigrated from Northern Ireland to the United States in search of a better life. His decision has shaped the Donnelly family. I have pondered the question: if he did not choose to leave Ireland, would I be who I am today? Being American allowed me to be who I am today. With this in mind, I also appreciate the opportunity to give back to a local company in Ireland, helping them in their endeavors and potentially contributing to their growth and support.
However, this truly fantastic opportunity for me would not have been possible or where I am today without my family, my Mom, Dad, Brother. I thank you for the love, support, and endless drive to help me succeed. I would also like to thank the University of Pittsburgh and the Haller faculty and staff for allowing me to participate in this exceptional program.
