Last day of classes!
Today started with a (surprise) visit to the Oaklander Hotel! We met with Theresa Murdoch, who is the Director of Human Resources at the establishment. Our conversation revolved around how the Oaklander keeps up with busy seasons at Pitt, such as move-in week and athletic events, and how the industry of hospitality is all about connections. What I thought was neat was how everyone comes together to support one another in times of need, such as when there was word that Former President Obama was going to be in town, and it became an all hands on deck operation. We concluded with a tour of the in-progress new restaurant, called Corks & Crust, which is under heavy construction but will be opening sometime in the winter. Overall, I enjoyed the experience of getting to talk to someone who experiences all sectors of business simultaneously and understands how to work with everything thrown at you.
Additionally, today was our last day of class with Dr. Ray Jones, who has given me some insights into the Sports Management Sector, and overall, helped me accomplish my first college class. I am grateful for the exposure and experience into what I can expect my first semester to look like, which definitely eases my mind before starting classes this fall.
We then ventured Ice House Studios to meet with Kara Kimicata, from Lawrenceville Corporation, who discussed the economy of Lawrenceville. I thought it was insightful how much thought was put into the reconstruction efforts and strategies to draw in tourism into the town. They focus on community interactions and support from local businesses to bring in foot traffic, similar to what we anticipate seeing in Carrigart. There is a lot to take away from this visit, which we can implement towards our projects such as promotional factors for events. After our time with the Lawrenceville Corporation, we stopped for an ice cream break at Millie’s (which was well deserved after walking in the glaring sun), where we hashed over plans for Ireland!
The main attraction of the day was an actual co-working space we visited, called Field Day. We met with Zachary Ciccone and Emi Driscoll, who elaborated upon their business and shared their journey of how the co-working hub came to be. After researching co-working hubs for two weeks, it was incredible to go and see one for real. Their business model was comprehensive and well thought out, with the business itself evolving over the course of many challenges and technological changes. The space itself inside is massive, with 3 floors of networking opportunities plus a rooftop for socialization. I thought this business was inspiring, and their creativity shines in the long-term connections and community they have curated.
We then met with Bruce Chan, Senior Director of Urban Design, who gave us a walking tour of the Lawrenceville Area. He discussed the history of the town, and talked about the local businesses in the area. We toured the Market House, which was an old bank, that holds various small businesses and creative spaces. After that excursion, we grabbed dinner at Lawrence Hall, where we enjoyed some good food! We ended the day by walking around the area and visiting the various shops in town. The town itself is beautiful and vibrant with bustling night life and many spots to visit and eat!
All in all, it was a fun day, and I will definitely be back in Lawrenceville in the fall!
