A Day of Learning: Hotels, Communities and Coworking

Today was a busy and insightful day, starting with a visit to The Oaklander Hotel, where we were given a detailed tour and presentation by their HR manager. She provided us with a comprehensive overview of how the hotel operates from a business perspective, highlighting several key aspects of hospitality management. One major topic she discussed was the relationship between supply and demand in determining room pricing. For example, when Pittsburgh hosts major events or experiences high tourist traffic, room rates at the hotel increase significantly due to the surge in demand. This dynamic pricing strategy is essential for maximizing revenue during peak periods. She also emphasized the importance of guests checking out on time. A delay in check-out can disrupt the hotel’s tightly scheduled turnaround process for cleaning and preparing rooms for incoming guests. When this happens, it limits the hotel’s ability to rebook rooms efficiently, ultimately reducing potential earnings. Her explanation shed light on the operational challenges that impact profitability and show the importance of time management, pricing strategy, and guest behavior in the success of the hospitality industry.

Next, we visited Ice House Studios where we met with Kara Kimicata from the Lawrenceville Corporation, who gave us valuable insight into the local economy and development of Lawrenceville. I found it particularly interesting how much planning and strategy went into the neighborhood’s revitalization and efforts to attract tourism. Their focus on fostering community engagement and encouraging support from local businesses to generate foot traffic closely mirrors the type of community-driven initiatives we expect to see in Carrigart. There were several takeaways from this visit that can be applied to our own projects, especially in terms of promoting events and creating a welcoming environment for visitors.

Lastly, we toured the co-working space, Field Day, which was an awesome experience. Field Day is a clubhouse in the heart of Lawrenceville, offering beautiful coworking, food and beverage, and enriching events. This was my first time in a co-working space, and I found it very warm and welcoming. I thought it was impressive how they used the multiple floors in their facility to their advantage. The space has a main floor with an area to study and have refreshments. Then the second and third floors were filled with rooms and other quit spaces to get work done. Lastly the rooftop was a beautiful spot to get work done or to simply take a lunch break with stunning views. The company places a strong emphasis on hospitality. Field Day is constantly making changes to their locations to cater to customers in efforts to provide the best experience. The insights shared during this visit were incredibly valuable and relevant.

Today the Haller team had a busy day filled with great experiences to prepare us for our trip to Ireland. I am looking forward to using the knowledge and skills I have learned in Pittsburgh, over in Ireland.
