This experience has truly been the best experience of my life, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity made possible through this scholarship. Over the past few months, I have not only explored a new part of the world, but I have also gained a deeper understanding of myself and the people around me. Living and studying abroad challenged me in ways I never expected, ultimately shaping me both personally and professionally.
One quote that perfectly captures my experience comes from Anthony Bourdain: “The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.” Throughout my time abroad, I was constantly placed in situations that required me to step outside of my own perspective—whether it was navigating cultural differences, communicating across language barriers, or simply observing the everyday lives of others. These moments pushed me to become more open-minded, empathetic, and aware of the world beyond my own experiences.
Personally, I have grown in my independence and confidence. From navigating a new city to doing things on my own that once intimidated me, I have learned how capable I truly am. I’ve become more comfortable with uncertainty and more willing to step outside of my comfort zone. Academically, this experience allowed me to engage with new ideas and perspectives that I wouldn’t have encountered at home. Being in a global setting made learning feel more dynamic and relevant, and it challenged me to think critically about business in an international context. Professionally, I developed a stronger sense of adaptability and problem-solving. Whether it was adjusting to different expectations or figuring things out in unfamiliar situations, I learned how to stay flexible and resourceful.
The most valuable skills I developed throughout this program were adaptability, communication, and cultural awareness. Learning how to navigate a different culture and communicate effectively, even when there were language barriers, has been incredibly impactful. I also strengthened my ability to be independent while still collaborating with others, which is something I know will be essential in any future career.
The takeaways from this experience will stay with me long after I return to Pitt Business. I plan to carry this sense of curiosity and openness into my remaining time as a student, seeking out new opportunities and perspectives whenever possible. I also hope to apply what I’ve learned about global business and cultural awareness in my coursework and future internships. Looking ahead, I know that the skills and mindset I’ve developed abroad will help me stand out in my career. I feel more prepared to work in diverse environments, adapt to new challenges, and connect with people from different backgrounds.
