GSL in Trinidad. Final Thoughts

As this course comes to an end, I have been reflecting on everything I have learned throughout the semester and how much my perspective has shifted since the beginning of the experience. When I first started this class, I expected it to focus mainly on completing a group project and gaining experience working in a new environment with a spring break travel aspect. While those expectations were met, I did not realize how much of my learning would come from the process itself rather than just the final deliverables. Over time, I learned that being in unfamiliar situations, working closely with a new team, and engaging with a real community partner taught me just as much, if not more, than the academic side of the course.

One of the biggest lessons I learned is how important curiosity and research are, but also how much more meaningful they become when applied in real situations. While readings, lectures, and preparation gave us a strong foundation, my understanding deepened most through conversations, feedback from Nature Seekers, and being in a completely different environment. This connects directly to our class discussions on experiential learning, especially the idea that learning is strengthened through reflection and real-world application. It also helped me better understand how different parts of the course connected together. What we discussed in class was not separate from the project itself, but directly applied throughout the entire experience. Because of this, I was able to see how concepts function in practice rather than just in theory.

Another major takeaway from this course was learning how to adapt in real situations. Throughout the semester, and especially during our time in Trinidad, our group faced several unexpected changes. From multiple day travel delays to being asked to present on short notice, we often had to adjust quickly and rethink our plans. In those moments, I learned how important it is to stay calm, communicate clearly, and focus on what needs to get done rather than what went wrong. In this short amount of time, I became more comfortable with uncertainty and more confident in my ability to handle situations that were not fully planned. I also realized that these moments of uncertainty often led to some of the most productive outcomes for our group. When plans changed, we were forced to communicate directly, divide tasks efficiently, and prioritize what mattered most. In hindsight, these challenges actually improved the quality of our work and helped us function better as a team. This is an important skill for my future professional life because most work environments require flexibility and the ability to problem-solve in real time.

Relationships were also a key part of this experience! The success of our project depended heavily on communication and trust between our group and Nature Seekers. One of the strengths of this experience was that Pitt already had an established relationship with the organization, which created a strong foundation for us to build on. Because of that, there was already a level of familiarity and trust when we arrived in-country, which made it easier to communicate openly and understand expectations from both ends. The environment felt very welcoming and collaborative, which helped us improve our deliverables and stay aligned with the client’s needs. At the same time, there is always a challenge in working within an existing partnership, since each new group has to build their own unique connection while continuing work that started before them. However, I think our group did a good job of engaging with the client, asking questions, and staying open to feedback. By completing our deliverables and maintaining consistent communication throughout the process, we also helped continue and strengthen this partnership for future students that will come after us.

If I were to explain this experience in a professional interview, I would describe it as a consulting-style project where I worked with a team to develop and deliver a training program for a nonprofit organization in Trinidad. The focus of the project was on project management and grant writing, and our responsibility was to work directly with the client to understand their needs and adjust our materials accordingly. I would highlight that the experience required constant communication, teamwork, and adaptability, especially when dealing with shifting expectations and time constraints. I would also emphasize situations where we had to think quickly and reorganize our work under pressure. Overall, this project shows my ability to work in a team setting, communicate with a client, and apply academic concepts to a real-world environment.

For future students in this program, there are a few key things I would emphasize. First, it is normal to feel unsure at the beginning, especially if you do not have experience with the subject matter or a project like this one. However, things become much clearer once you begin working through the project and relying on your team’s strengths. Second, it is extremely helpful to have a strong starting point for your deliverables before going in-country. This allows you to focus more on refining your work and building relationships rather than starting from scratch under time pressure. Lastly, it is important to stay present throughout the experience. The time goes by quickly, and both the challenges and positive moments contribute to your overall growth in different ways.

Overall, this was a very meaningful experience that helped me grow both personally and professionally. It pushed me to become more adaptable, communicate more effectively, and work more closely with others in a real-world setting. It also gave me more confidence in my ability to work in group environments and handle responsibility in unfamiliar situations. Moving forward, I feel more prepared to take on collaborative projects and contribute in meaningful ways, even when conditions are unpredictable. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of this unique program and for everything I have learned throughout the semester, and I will carry these skills and experiences with me as I move forward in my academic and professional life.
