Mercadona for Lunch?

During my internship, each assignment is unique. Every individual who contacts the company has different needs, whether they are looking for a specific program or have distinct goals in mind. I must consider these varying requirements whenever I work, as each person requires a different approach. This aspect of the job makes complete training challenging, as each day presents new obstacles. This also creates some uncertainty, as I often don’t know how to approach every issue. I thrive on clear instructions, but the ambiguity surrounding my role makes it difficult to receive that guidance. While I recognize that crafting and sending emails and messages to promote our company demands a considerable amount of time and effort, there are instances when I find myself lacking direction and focus on what tasks to prioritize. On certain days, I sit at my desk without any pressing tasks or matters to attend to. This often results in prolonged periods where I have little to do, particularly during times when we are not receiving inquiries from potential new clients. It can be quite frustrating to navigate these quiet spells, especially knowing how essential consistent outreach is for fostering business growth and building valuable relationships.

I navigate these difficulties by going out of my way to complete tasks that are not necessarily mine. Every day, I need to respond to those who have not emailed or messaged us back regarding their plan, and if they decide to pursue a program our company offers. However, I often finish those tasks very quickly throughout the day, so I am left with no new work of my own. I need to have an ongoing task in order to feel as if I am working hard, so I go out of my way to find work that needs to be done, whether that be physical housekeeping around the office, or digital housekeeping where I organize all of our files and messages. In doing so, I am not only showing my colleagues that I am able to do more around the office, but I am also proving to myself that I am able to juggle more tasks than I originally thought. Being on this International Internship Program has shown me that not only can I complete my own tasks for the day, but it also shows me that I have enough drive in the business world to take on more work.

Additionally, volunteering for extra responsibilities has helped me become more comfortable working in a professional environment. Rather than waiting for someone to tell me what to do next, I have learned to assess the needs of the office and determine where my efforts can be most useful. This has strengthened my confidence and improved my ability to manage multiple responsibilities at once. These skills will be valuable in future careers, as employers often seek individuals who are capable of taking initiative and solving problems independently.

If I can extract one insight from the internship, it would be that each day presents unique challenges and a distinct array of circumstances. Part of this experience is tantalizing and motivates me to address these issues; however, another aspect proves to be quite challenging, as there is no feasible way to fully prepare for tasks that differ greatly from one another. I believe this internship provides a profound understanding of the sales domain. Frequently, there are clients who engage in back-and-forth communication, only to ultimately decline at the conclusion of the process. These encounters have prompted me to engage in self-reflection, contemplating whether I could have salvaged the deal had I approached it differently or if those individuals were simply never inclined to agree to our programs. However, some clients exhibit a high level of receptiveness and express willingness to participate in our program after only a few exchanges. I think this experience accurately reflects the nature of sales in general; one will never know a potential client’s willingness to purchase a product until they undertake the initiative to engage.

Furthermore, these interactions have taught me the importance of resilience and persistence. Not every conversation will result in a successful outcome, but every interaction provides an opportunity to learn something new. Whether a client chooses to participate in a program or not, there is always value in understanding their concerns, motivations, and decision-making process. Over time, these experiences help build stronger communication skills and a better understanding of how to connect with different types of people. This internship is instrumental in helping me realize that, and it has given me a much greater appreciation for the effort required to succeed in a sales-oriented environment.
