Navigating the Fashion Industry in a New Country

For my international internship, I am working in the fashion media industry as a fashion editor intern. This is an industry I have become familiar with over the past year through working for a seamstress and interning during New York Fashion Week. Those experiences gave me valuable insight into the fast-paced nature of the fashion world and helped me develop a strong interest in pursuing a career in the industry. While my previous experiences focused more on garment production and event support, this internship has allowed me to explore the editorial and media side of fashion, giving me a broader understanding of how different parts of the industry operate.

One of the most exciting experiences during my first week was attending Stockholm Fashion Week. Throughout the week, I attended fashion shows, presentations, and social events, which provided an opportunity to observe the Swedish fashion industry firsthand. Having previously experienced New York Fashion Week, I was able to compare the two and notice several differences. One of the most obvious differences was the emphasis on punctuality and organization. The latest show I attended in Stockholm started only about ten minutes late. My experience in New York was very different, as many shows started close to an hour after their scheduled time. At the time, I learned that these delays were considered normal within the New York fashion scene. This difference may seem small, but it reflects broader cultural values regarding time management, professionalism, and workplace expectations.

Another difference I noticed was the overall atmosphere of the events. While New York Fashion Week often feels highly competitive, fast-moving, and focused on generating excitement, Stockholm Fashion Week felt more relaxed and collaborative. The events still attracted industry professionals, influencers, journalists, and designers, but there was a stronger emphasis on creativity, sustainability, and meaningful conversations about the future of fashion. This experience helped me understand how cultural values can influence the way an industry operates in different countries.

Through my experiences so far, I have started to uncover what it takes to be successful in the fashion industry. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential because fashion professionals must constantly communicate ideas, deadlines, and other timely tasks. As a fashion editor intern, communication is especially important because much of the work involves discussing story ideas, conducting research, making sure stories are on time and correct, attending events, and helping create content that accurately reflects both the publication and the brands being featured.

Creativity is another important skill in the fashion media industry. Fashion is constantly evolving, and professionals must be able to identify emerging trends, develop fresh ideas, and present information in engaging and creative ways. When creating layouts or Instagram posts, I need to be sure to use new ideas to keep the audience interested and engaged. During my internship, I have seen how creative thinking helps teams produce content that stands out in a highly competitive industry.

The ability to work effectively under pressure is also critical. The fashion industry is known for tight deadlines, last-minute changes, and fast-paced schedules. During my first week of the internship, I have already seen many of these skills put to the test. Covering events, meeting deadlines, and adapting to unexpected changes require flexibility and strong organizational skills. Professionals who can remain calm and productive under pressure are often more successful because they can continue producing high-quality work even when situations become stressful.

In Sweden, there are additional competencies that are especially valuable. The Swedish fashion industry places a strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation. Many Swedish brands are committed to reducing their environmental impact and promoting ethical production practices. As a result, professionals working in the industry benefit from having knowledge of sustainable materials, responsible manufacturing processes, and environmental issues affecting fashion. Sustainability is not treated as a trend but rather as a core part of many business strategies and brand identities.

Collaboration is another important competency within the Swedish fashion industry. Swedish workplaces often encourage teamwork and value contributions from employees at all levels of an organization. Rather than relying on highly hierarchical structures, many companies promote open communication and shared decision-making. It has only been a week and my boss allowed me full creativity on an important story, and gave me minor corrections. Being able to work effectively within a team, listen to different perspectives, and contribute ideas important. During my internship, I have already observed how collaboration helps create a positive and productive work environment.

Overall, this internship is helping me develop both industry-specific skills and cross-cultural competencies that will benefit me in my future career. By working in a new country and experiencing a different fashion culture, I am gaining a deeper understanding of the global fashion industry. I am learning how professional expectations, workplace values, and industry priorities can vary across cultures while also recognizing the universal skills that contribute to success. The opportunity to work in Stockholm and experience Swedish fashion firsthand is providing valuable knowledge and practical experience that will help me grow both personally and professionally.
