Hej from Stockholm! Week 3

By far the most exciting week yet. After two weeks of getting comfortable with the website, the data, and the railway system, things shifted from maintenance into something with real stakes attached.

Taking Charge

I am now assuming charge of an actual property, and for the next month I will be managing its average nightly renting rate. This is a noticeable step up from the work I have been doing. Instead of cleaning data and maintaining a site behind the scenes, I am now responsible for a number that directly affects revenue, and that number is mine to set, adjust, and answer for.

The plan is straightforward in goal but not in execution: beat the system they currently have in place. The existing approach works well enough, but after spending the last two weeks blending their pricing analytics into visualizations on the website, I have a decent sense of where there is room to do better. I want to take what I have learned from that data and apply it to actual pricing decisions rather than just displaying them.

The Numbers

Based on my projections, the approach I am putting in place should bring in roughly $2,500 more than what was previously expected for this property over the month. For the kind of margins involved, that is a meaningful difference, and it is the first time my work here has translated so directly into a concrete financial result.

I will admit I am proud of it. There is a real difference between analyzing numbers for a report and being the person whose decisions move them. If the projection holds, it will be solid evidence that the concepts from my economics and finance courses actually hold up once you take them out of the classroom, which was one of the things I set out to test when I got here.

Now I just have to deliver on it. Plenty can change over a month, and a projection is only a projection until the month actually plays out. But for the first time, I feel like I am doing the job rather than learning it.

More soon. Vi ses!
