Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable: From Los Angeles to Pittsburgh to Ireland🤯🤞

Hi, I’m Cade Garlett. I’m from Los Angeles, California, where the temperature hardly drops below 60 degrees and I get to surf and play beach volleyball all year long. Before I get into my extremely interesting introduction, I should admit that I’m not the best writer, so bear with me as I try my best to write as eloquently as Shakespeare. Anyway, with that out of the way, we can continue with the rest of the introduction so you can hopefully learn a little bit more about me. My hometown of Monrovia is in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, and I love seeing the wildlife while being so close to the city. I have the most energetic sister, who always begs me to buy her boba, and two parents who are constantly stressed about anything college related. Some of my hobbies are camping, playing volleyball, running, and pretty much everything outdoors.

I chose the Haller Global Fellows Program because it lets me get comfortable in Pittsburgh before school starts while also giving me the chance to do real consulting work in Northern Ireland. Coming from Los Angeles, I only visited Pitt for a weekend, so exploring the city early and meeting other freshmen feels like the perfect way to start college. I’m still deciding between finance, accounting, or even pre‑med, so having this experience before classes begin helps me figure out what direction fits me best.

The consulting part of the program stood out to me because I want hands‑on experience with small businesses. I’ve worked at my grandparents’ plumbing store for years, and I’ve learned a lot about customer service and problem‑solving. I also plan to work as an EMT, which has strengthened my communication skills and sparked my interest in medicine. Haller brings all of these pieces together and gives me a head start academically, socially, and professionally. So if you see me wandering around campus looking lost, just know I’m probably trying to find my next class… or the nearest boba shop.
