Hello everyone for the final time,
After eight unforgettable weeks, my international internship experience in Berlin has officially come to an end. Looking back on my final week and saying goodbye to the city, my coworkers, and the friends I made was incredibly bittersweet. It feels like just yesterday that I was packing my bags, nervous and excited about what the summer would bring. Now, I am returning home with stronger technical skills, greater independence, a deeper understanding of different cultures, and memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Personally, one of my main goals was to become more independent and adaptable. Living abroad for eight weeks required a completely different level of responsibility from traveling with family. I had to navigate public transportation, manage my budget, cook for myself, solve problems when plans changed, and become comfortable asking for help. I also travelled to several cities across Europe, pushing myself even further outside my comfort zone. Whether I was figuring out train routes, dealing with language barriers, or adjusting plans because of unexpected weather, I became more confident in my ability to handle unfamiliar situations.
This experience also made me more open-minded. Berlin is an incredibly international city, and my workplace included people from countries across Europe, Asia, North America, and South America. Working and building friendships with people from different backgrounds taught me to listen carefully, avoid assumptions, and approach unfamiliar situations with curiosity. As an anthropology minor, I also saw firsthand how culture influences workplaces, relationships, work-life balance, and ideas of success.
Academically, my internship helped me connect what I have learned at Pitt to real data science work. I worked as a data science intern at Klim, an agricultural technology company focused on regenerative agriculture. I contributed to projects involving model evaluation, sensitivity analysis, data harmonization, data quality, database access, and machine learning infrastructure. Many of these topics were new to me, and I often felt unsure about where to begin. However, I learned to break unfamiliar tasks into smaller steps, ask specific clarifying questions, conduct independent research, and keep working even when I did not immediately know the answer.
One of my biggest lessons was that technical knowledge is only one part of being a successful data scientist. Data can be incomplete, complicated, or highly specific to an industry. Since agricultural data and regenerative farming were new to me, I needed to understand the purpose and requirements of the data before analysing it. This taught me the importance of domain knowledge, clear documentation, and communication between technical and nontechnical teams. I also improved my ability to explain technical findings in simpler language so that people with different levels of data science experience could understand my presentations.
Professionally, I became much more confident in my ability to contribute to a team. At the beginning of the internship, I worried about asking too many questions or making mistakes. Over time, I realized that thoughtful questions are not a weakness; they are necessary for producing accurate work. I learned to take ownership of projects, communicate my progress, work with colleagues across several teams, and use feedback to improve. I especially enjoyed model evaluation and analytical tasks because they allowed me to think critically and investigate why a model behaved in a certain way.
The workplace culture in Germany also changed how I think about professional success. I saw that dedication to work does not have to mean sacrificing your personal life. Employees worked hard, but time off, sick leave, rest, travel, and relationships outside the office were respected. I hope to carry this perspective into my future career by working with discipline while also protecting my health and well-being.
When I return to Pitt, I plan to bring back both the technical skills and personal lessons I gained. In my classes, I want to take more initiative, ask questions, and approach difficult assignments without being afraid of not knowing everything at the start.
In my future career, I want to continue exploring data science, machine learning, and analytics. This internship showed me that I enjoy problem-solving, model evaluation, and translating complex information into useful insights. More importantly, it proved that I can enter an unfamiliar industry, learn quickly, and make meaningful contributions.
This experience was much more than an internship or a summer abroad. It helped me become a more independent, adaptable, curious, and confident person. I am deeply thankful to my donor for believing in my potential and making this opportunity possible. The impact of this scholarship will continue far beyond these eight weeks, and I hope to honour that support through the work I do at Pitt and throughout my future career.
