As I reflect on my time in Sweden, it is hard to believe how much I experienced and learned in such a short period. When I first arrived, I was excited but also a little nervous about living and working in a new country. I knew this experience would challenge me academically and professionally, but I did not realize how much it would also shape me personally. Looking back now, I can confidently say that this internship has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my college journey.
First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the donors who made this opportunity possible through their generosity. Receiving scholarship support allowed me to participate in an experience that otherwise would have been much more difficult financially. Because of your investment in students like me, I was able to gain international business experience, immerse myself in another culture, and grow in ways that cannot be replicated in a traditional classroom. Thank you for believing in students and for making experiences like this accessible.
One of the greatest lessons I learned in Sweden was the importance of embracing new perspectives. Working alongside people from different backgrounds challenged me to think differently about communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. Every conversation introduced me to new ideas, and every project reminded me that there is rarely only one “right” way to approach a challenge. Experiencing another country’s work culture also showed me the value of trust, open communication, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. These are lessons that I will continue to carry with me long after returning home.
Personally, this experience helped me become much more independent and confident. Traveling internationally required me to step outside of my comfort zone almost every day. Whether I was navigating public transportation, adapting to a different culture, or building relationships with people I had just met, I learned to become comfortable with uncertainty. At the beginning of the program, I often found myself second-guessing decisions, but by the end, I felt much more confident taking initiative and solving problems on my own. I also discovered how rewarding it can be to embrace unfamiliar experiences rather than shy away from them.
Academically, my internship allowed me to connect what I have learned at the University of Pittsburgh with real-world business practices. Throughout the program, I observed how organizations approach innovation, sustainability, and collaboration in a global context. Seeing these concepts applied outside of a textbook gave me a deeper appreciation for the importance of adaptability in today’s business environment. As a Business Information Systems major with a Marketing minor, I was especially interested in how technology supports business operations while keeping customer needs at the center of decision-making. The experience reinforced my passion for combining business strategy with technology to solve meaningful problems.
Professionally, I developed skills that will benefit me throughout my career. Working on projects with diverse teams strengthened my communication and teamwork abilities while also teaching me how to collaborate effectively with people who have different perspectives and working styles. I became more comfortable asking questions, seeking feedback, and adapting when plans changed. These experiences taught me that successful professionals are not simply those with technical knowledge, but those who are curious, flexible, and willing to continuously learn from others.
Beyond the internship itself, living in Sweden gave me a greater appreciation for cultural differences and global perspectives. Before traveling, I had heard that Swedish people were reserved, but I was pleasantly surprised by how welcoming and kind everyone was. That experience reminded me not to rely on stereotypes or assumptions when meeting new people. Instead, I learned the value of approaching every interaction with curiosity, respect, and an open mind.
As I return to the University of Pittsburgh, I hope to share what I have learned with my classmates, professors, and the organizations I am involved in. Whether through Corporate Connections, Smart Women Securities, or conversations with fellow students interested in studying abroad, I want to encourage others to seek experiences that challenge them beyond the classroom. I believe international education helps develop not only stronger professionals but also more thoughtful and empathetic global citizens.
Looking ahead, I know this experience will continue to influence both my academic journey and future career. I hope to pursue opportunities that allow me to work with diverse teams, solve complex business problems, and contribute to organizations with an international perspective. Sweden showed me that growth happens when we are willing to step outside of what is familiar, embrace uncertainty, and remain open to learning from others.
This internship was much more than an opportunity to travel abroad—it was an opportunity to grow as a student, a future business professional, and a person. I am incredibly grateful for everyone who helped make this experience possible, and I will carry the lessons I learned in Sweden with me for years to come.
