“By seeing London, I have seen as much of life as the world can show.” – Samuel Johnson, 1773, as quoted by James Boswell in The Life of Samuel Johnson, 1791
Like this quote says, London is really full of life. Everyday there is something new to do you can never really get bored. This is the kind of thing that attracted me to London in the first place, I personally like being busy and being in a lively city. I was not expecting London to be so multicultural, so I was pleasantly surprised when I got there. London is truly a global city, all different cultures and people blend together and makes London what it is. It is also a blend of the old and new, a great example of this is the millennial bridge which connects St. Paul’s cathedral to Tate Modern. Everywhere you go you are reminded of the past even though you are living in a very modern city.
I felt like while in London I learned a lot about what I like and my confidence to navigate and plan my own adventures. Because my class schedule was so different from my flatmates and friends, explored a lot of London by myself. I learned to enjoy exploring by myself and while also being aware of my surroundings. Academically I felt that I learned a lot in my urban studies class, the field studies were very helpful when trying to understand London as a global city. This was definitely a unique course that opened my eyes to the history and importance of London. My international marketing class was also very informative and interactive. It was structured like a English college class which was a great experience because I would like to attend graduate school in England. Both classes met my expectations and allowed me to expand my international knowledge and experiences.
Some takeaways I want to being back to Pitt Business is the idea of approaching each idea with a global perspective. For example during my international marketing class, our professor asked us what is the top phone company. Almost everyone said iPhone because that is what is popular in America, but the answer was Samsung because the rest of the world uses them. When looking a issues or problems it is important to look at it from a different point of view. Another takeaway is that I really got to understand and use Pitt’s motto of from the classroom to the city to the world. I learned that having global connections and experiences is super important in business. Having a global perspective leads to many opportunities and drives me to continue to travel. London has been a great gateway for me to obtaining a more global perspective and am looking forward to continuing it.
