Working On My People Skills

Working for a recruitment agency is unlike any job I’ve had before. It is an interesting environment in the office because there are two sides- permanent recruitment and temporary recruitment. In both cases the “product” our company produces is people. because of this it can be very rewarding to fill a large temp booking or find someone a new perm job but also very frustrating because people are very generally unpredictable.

In temp recruitment (where I’ve spent most of my time) it can be very frustrating since some the clients ask for a lot on very little notice. For example, the Guinness Storehouse (one of our biggest clients), this past week asked for 30 staff to be added to our booking the day before they were needed. While we were able to fill it, it meant a later night of awaiting replies from bartenders to see if they were available to work. The other frustrating part of temp is the candidates. While someone might tell you there available to work Wednesday on Monday when you ask, life happens and often we have to over staff large bookings due to the number of people who get sick, have travel issues getting there on time, or just generally don’t show up for a shift. Its a difficult job to manage people. I’ve learned from working with such an unpredictable staff that sometimes its best to just roll with the punches- if someone cancels its best not to stress about it and just work hard to find someone else and confirm with them more in the future.

Over the weekend- a few friends and I went to visit the Cliffs of Moher just to get away for the day. It was breathtaking and so cool to see something in person that I had been googling pictures of since before I finished my application to the program. I’ve really enjoyed slowly checking different things off my bucket list while I’m here and Im so happy that we made the trip this weekend.
