Black and Gold

Positive Advertising Experience in a Targeted Market Segment:  Similar to my Lady GaGa “Something about my cool Pittsburgh guy….” example, describe a time when an advertising campaign did a compelling job appealing to you as a member of a targeted market segment.

Progressive’s commercial series with Flo has done a fantastic job advertising and appealing to me.  Their commercials are funny, and to a consumer like myself who will have to purchase car insurance soon, it brings Progessive to the front of my mind.

Negative Advertising Experience in a Targeted Market Segment: Similar to the creeped-out reaction I am having to the LenCrafters’ office sending me a fake optometry appointment notice for August 6, 2019 (which is actually an attempt to target me as a returning customer segment of the LensCrafters in Ross Park Mall), describe a time when an advertising campaign really missed the mark while trying to appeal to you as a member of a targeted market segment.

Most letters from colleges did not have any effect on my interest in them whatsoever.  Small, random universities from all over the country would send letters to me and every high school student in the country.  They described the university poorly most of the time, and annoyed me more than it made me want to investigate the school any further.

Other Examples Like This?:  Based on our review of market segmentation and your examples of positive and negative experiences in target market campaigns, how will you approach market segmentation in your future professional roles?

I need to first understand my audience to make a tailored ad campaign that would appeal to them.  For example, if I was advertising a new shoe that I wanted to sell in the Pittsburgh region, I would make it in a black and gold colorway.  Since Pittsburgh’s colors are black and gold, there is a higher demand for black and gold clothing items than there usually is in other cities.
