TBLB – Triple Bottom Line Baby

Shared Value – People/Planet/Profit:  The shared value approach to analysis for business decision-makers has a conceptual focus through perspectives like the “Triple Bottom Line” – in which a manager reviews how a business model addresses issues of People, Planet and Profit.  Based on what you see in the 55 second video on Thread International, how is Thread’s business model reflective of People, Planet and Profit:

Thread is able to use their business model to help people, help the planet, and net a profit.  They are able to collect trash from the poorest areas of the world to create fabrics and textiles.  Through doing this, they are helping out the planet and the environment, as well as creating a product that can be sold for a profit.  It also gives job opportunities to people in poor areas of the world.  Through their job they are then able to support a family, go to school, and inject money back into their community through purchasing goods.  Through Thread utilizing their current business plan, they are helping people, the planet, and receiving a profit.

Shared Value – Social/Economic/Environmental :  The shared value perspective to analysis for business decision-makers through measurement approaches like documenting Social Sustainability, Economic Sustainability and Environmental Sustainability.  Based on what you see in the 55 second video on Thread International (also on the website), how does Thread International demonstrate its impact in one (or more) of these areas:

Thread International is able to create Economic and Environmental Sustainability through their goals.  They create Environmental Sustainability when they clean trash from communities and towns, which allows for less litter and pollution in communities.  They also create Economic Sustainability by providing jobs and business opportunities for the people who live in the communities where they conduct their operations.

Other Examples Like This?:  As a future manager facing complex environments, where do you see the utility of either of these approaches to shared value in your future work?

I can see the utility in sustaining the environment because it would negatively affect my business practices.  If there was a calamity that involves the area of my practice or the area of my clients’ practice, then that would lead to lost business and therefore less revenue for me.
