The only area of IS I have experience with is Entertainment. I use Netflix and Hulu, which both utilize streaming and curated content. These companies allow you to stream movies and tv shows on demand on a variety of devices including televisions, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Curated content plays a major role in these streaming platforms because it allows companies like Netflix and Hulu to gather data about an individual’s preferences in order to recommend other content they may enjoy as well. This feature is also used to analyze data from all of their users in an attempt to figure out which movies and tv shows they can add that will appeal to the largest number of users and hopefully gain new members of the service. From a consumer’s perspective, streaming is beneficial because it requires no wait time to watch desired content and you don’t have to leave the house to purchase a DVD at a store. Curated content is also helpful because users can find new content to watch without having to browse through a large selection of movies and tv shows and there is a good chance they will end up liking at least some of the options that are chosen for them because they are based on genres the consumer already enjoys.

What is the value added by this area of IS?
I am interested in learning more about Fintech because if I end up majoring in Finance, I think it will be beneficial to have at least a general understanding about how technology is beginning to impact the area of financial services and changing career opportunities within the realm of Finance. Technology is starting to affect nearly every area of business, but Finance seems to be advancing faster when it comes to the integration of technology and the use of different programs to help speed up certain processes. For example, online banking has allowed individuals to manage their accounts without having to go to a physical bank location, which saves time and money. The area of biometrics has also led to an increase in privacy when it comes to important financial accounts and related information, which always makes people feel more secure about not having their personal information stolen.
Other Examples Like This?: Based on the IS-related material that you see in these slides, what specific areas do you likely to see as a big part of your career and professional development (i.e. where do you want to gain experience in internships and your first jobs)?
As I previously mentioned, if I go into Finance or really any other area of business, I think a basic knowledge of Fintech will become a vital part of my career. In general though, I am now much more interested in gaining technological knowledge because in this day and age, technology is becoming an integral part of our world and I think the smartest move businesses can make is embracing it and learning how to take advantage of it to increase efficiency and broaden their capabilities.
