G’bye Sydney, Australia!

It is hard to believe that this semester is almost over! As this semester comes to an end, I look back on my time with EventBuzz360 and Pitt’s GBI program fondly. I am so incredibly thankful to have been given this opportunity to experience working virtually in Sydney, Australia in the midst of COVID-19!

To be honest, before I began, I did not really know what to expect going into this as I have never had to work remotely let alone remotely and internationally. I was very nervous starting out as I had no experience prior to this internship, and I was worried about my own abilities to be successful in this placement. As someone who hates to make mistakes, I learned to step out of my comfort zone and realized it’s alright to make mistakes as this is all a learning experience. Nevertheless, my experience at EventBuzz360 (a search platform for the events industry), has been so fruitful and encouraging. I have been able to gain insight on the events industry and develop a plethora of soft skills such as time management, communication, and teamwork. Thanks to this internship, I now feel confident moving forward.

I was actually able to apply a lot of the stuff I learned in my Marketing class to the work I completed during my internship. We focused a lot on who our target audience is and how to appeal to them as we created and scheduled content for our social media accounts. Scheduling and creating content for our social media accounts (Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, etc.) was one of my major tasks, so understanding our audience and what they are looking for was super useful.

One of the biggest challenges during this internship was the amount of teamwork and collaboration that was needed to complete tasks. Teamwork itself was not an issue, but our team of six consisted of a few interns from both the east coast and west coast and we had to relay information back to Sydney, Australia, and so given the time difference, it made it difficult to meet sometimes. It is normally already difficult enough to schedule a time where six people are available, but factoring in different time zones made it a lot more difficult. Thus, these instances helped to strengthen my communication and time management skills as I had to constantly ensure that deadlines were being met and information was relayed effectively.

Despite these challenges with communication and time zone differences, my experience at EventBuzz360 was so rewarding. The company culture was very laid back and casual, and I really felt as if I was a part of a team. Everyone was super collaborative and respectful, so it made working with each other very easy. The most rewarding thing about working at EventBuzz360 is definitely the relationships that I have made. I learned a lot from working with others and enjoyed the collaborative and more casual working environment.

I definitely feel a lot more confident going forward from this internship, and I really believe that I learned a lot and grew as both a person and intern while working for EventBuzz360.
