Dublin From Home

Hello everyone! My name is Leia and I am a rising senior majoring in Media and Professional Communications with a focus in Digital Media as well as a minor in Legal Studies. I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio and I have loved living in Pittsburgh for the past three years! Pitt has provided me with so many opportunities to grow as an individual personally and professionally. When I first came to Pitt, I had no idea what I wanted to study. A variety of classes and tools here at Pitt helped me uncover my hidden strengths! I discovered my love for creating digital content as well as my passion for criminal justice reform. I currently serve as the VP of Media for Pitt CHAARG, a women’s fitness and healthy living club on campus, and I am also a sister of Kappa Kappa Gamma. As far as my educational background, I have finished all of my general education requirements and almost all of my major requirements! During my senior year I will be working towards my minor and certificate. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy reading, trying new coffee shops, and listening to music. I also work part-time at the Pittsburgh zoo!

I am very excited to participate in the International Internship program this summer! I will be interning in Dublin, Ireland at the Irish Academy of Public Relations as a social media intern! Though I wish I could be there in person, I think a remote internship will provide me with valuable experience. Going/working abroad has always been something I hoped to pursue. I chose this program because it will be a step in the right direction regarding my global competency, and knowledge of an international work environment. In addition, with the growth of the remote job market and a technological workplace, the skills I will develop in my opinion, are essential. Working remotely is also something I would be interested in doing post-graduation. As far as my internship this summer, the Irish Academy of Public Relations is currently in the process of re-branding their company. I will be aiding them in this process by integrating their new content and mission across various social media platforms. This is directly related to my current major in Digital Media, as well as my personal interests in content creation.

There is no doubt in my mind that I will develop as an individual during the course of this program. Every choice that I have made since arriving at Pitt freshman year as helped me learn more about myself on a personal level. I can confidently say that I am not the same person I was three years ago. I have grown exponentially and I hope I continue to do so. I hope this internship will help me realize what I have to offer as an individual personally and professionally. This being my first internship, I have a lot to learn. This can be daunting but also exciting – I love learning new things! Specifically, I hope to improve my communication skills. I have a shy demeanor, so I am looking to increase my confidence in the professional workplace. A remote internship, especially one that deals with another country and time differences, will most definitely help me be on top of my communication. There is also so much valuable experience to be gained when you are working with people from another country and culture. This will allow me to learn how to communicate with a variety of individuals effectively. Living in the United States my entire life, I have not been exposed to many other cultures on such a large scale. I look forward to learning how an international workplace operates in opposed to my work experience here in the States.

This experience will also help me professionally by giving me the opportunity to grow my technical skills. I will be working with various social media platforms from a business perspective. Understanding social media on a business level is essential to my career goals. I hope to work in social media/marketing/communications after graduation so I am always looking to learn as much as possible. I am very thankful that I have been given an internship that allows me to explore my field directly. Since the company I am interning for is also re-branding, this allows me to have a direct role in a project that will have a lasting impact. I will be gaining valuable experience that will help me in all of my future endeavors. I hope to gain new perspectives personally and professionally. I can’t wait to see what this summer has in store!
