Ciao from Florence! My study abroad journey has been transformative, shaping my character development in many ways. Each obstacle I’ve faced has served as a stepping stone for personal growth. Whether it’s mastering new transportation systems or overcoming language barriers, I’ve developed a spirit of curiosity, adaptability, and problem-solving. Constantly being pushed out of my comfort zone has led me to discover more about myself and the world.
Curiosity and exploration have been fundamental to my experience. Moving to a new city where I didn’t know the language, customs, or people was scary at first. However, I’ve embraced curiosity by venturing into new parts of the city and seeking recommendations from locals. My learning has taken many forms: from conducting online research, such as reading Wikipedia articles or browsing Reddit and TripAdvisor reviews, to exploring the city firsthand. Whether it’s following my interests or seeking recommendations from locals, I’ve discovered that there are many paths to exploring a destination beyond the conventional routes. This willingness to try new experiences and ask questions has made the unfamiliar environment feel less overwhelming.
Along with being curious, I have learned to think quickly on my feet and solve problems when coming to obstacles. Flexibility has become an important part of my experience as I learn to navigate unexpected disruptions with poise, adjusting to delayed transportation or overcoming language barriers. Each obstacle has allowed me to use problem solving skills- forcing me to think creatively and remain calm in unfamiliar situations. Whether relying on street signs, seeking guidance from locals, consulting information guides, or exploring new modes of transportation, I’ve developed my street smarts in this new environment.
Studying abroad in Florence has had its ups and downs. From this experience, I have become more open minded and cool in unfamiliar situations. I am excited continue exploring with curiosity and am confident that no matter the obstacle, I will be able to navigate the challenge.
