Hello! My name is Marcela Fioranelli, and I’m thrilled to share my study abroad journey in Florence, Italy. I am currently a rising junior at Pitt, majoring in Human Resources Management and minoring in Chinese. Personally, I’ve always been passionate about exploring new cultures, languages, and cuisines. Academically, I have a deep interest in DEI, the Arts, and history, which aligns perfectly with the rich historical and cultural tapestry of Florence. Professionally, I aspire to become a Chief Human Resources Officer in the future, and I believe this experience will be a significant stepping stone towards achieving my ambitions.
I chose to study abroad in Florence for several reasons. First and foremost, Florence is a city steeped in art, history, and culture – it’s the birthplace of the Renaissance, after all! The program offered by Pitt Business is known for its comprehensive curriculum that integrates hands-on experiences with academic learning; for instance, I’m taking an Art Reinassaince history class, and in every session, we get to tour a specific historic site of Florence; it’s super exciting. Additionally, the opportunity to immerse myself in the Italian way of life, improve my language skills, and study in such an inspiring environment was too good to pass up.
My goals for this program are multifaceted. Academically, I aim to deepen my understanding of European culture and lifestyle, taking full advantage of the resources and expertise available in Florence. Personally, I hope to develop a more global perspective by engaging with locals, making new friends, and participating in cultural activities. Professionally, I am eager to build a network of international contacts and gain insights that will enhance my career prospects in Human Resources.
One of the tools I’ve found incredibly helpful in preparing for this journey is the Clifton Strengths assessment, which identified my top strengths as includer, Discipline and Communication. Here’s how I plan to leverage these strengths to ensure a successful and fulfilling experience in Florence:
Includer: This strength will help me create a sense of community and belonging wherever I go. I plan to use my Includer strength to make connections with both locals and fellow international students, ensuring everyone feels welcomed and valued.
Discipline: This strength is particularly useful for maintaining structure and productivity in a new environment. I intend to leverage my Discipline strength by creating a balanced schedule that allows me to excel academically while also taking time to explore and enjoy the cultural experiences Florence has to offer.
Communication: Utilizing this strength, I will effectively share my experiences and insights with others. For example, I’ll use my Communication strength to document my journey through blogs, vlogs, and social media, helping others learn from my experiences.
I am incredibly excited to embark on this journey and share my experiences with you. Stay tuned for more updates as I explore the wonders of Florence and immerse myself in this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Ciao for now!
Marcela Fioranelli
