My name is Katie McLean and I going to be a Junior at the University of Pittsburgh business program. I am currently majoring in Marketing with a minor in Studio Arts and working on getting a certificate in Digital Media.
I chose this program because I’ve never been to England (let alone Europe) and wanted a full immersive experience when I first get an impression of an entierly new country. By taking a class I not only get some credits done, but also get to work with locals in an internship. I get valuable work experience and also cultural awareness all in 6 weeks within one program. It felt like the most efficient and enjoyable experience choice for me!
My main for this program are to feel comfortable working and socializing in a new country on my own. I want to feel confident in both my work, my ability to navigate (maybe not drive on the left side quite yet though), and talk to locals. I want to use these 6 weeks to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, as it is not only my first time in England but also my first time working through marketing and social media roles outside of a school club setting.
I hope to gain a new perspective on the culture here (and maybe take some slang back to the states). While I may never get the hang of walking on the left side of the sidewalk, I do hope to gain knowledge of the business world in London and beyond. Lifting my eyes from just the States culture to much, much more will be something I take back to the rest of my college experience. And plus, the walking pace of the native London-ers is just to my liking (quite brisk as I’ve seen it)!
Regarding the Clifton Strengths, I believe that being adaptable will be the biggest strength on this trip. Getting on the wrong track on the Tube is not the end of the world, although it may seem it in the first week. Allowing room for mistakes, lots of questions, and flexibility is what will help me mold (and not break) into the student, friend, and coworker that I can be to become successful this trip. Along with that, allowing for connectedness to my coworkers and fellow students will help keep the homesickness at bay. No one wants to be lonely in London, and positivity in perspective along with the new connections bound to happen will make for an enjoyable and useful trip!
As the title says above, I’ve got to go because London awaits!
