Going to Dublin

Hi, my name is Henry Gallup and I am currently an upcoming Junior student at the University of Pittsburgh. I am planning on majoring in Finance with a minor in Economics and a focus in Psychology. I have enjoyed many of my courses here at Pitt and believe that they have been super helpful for my career. In addition to my classes, I am also a member of Pitt’s undergraduate Finance club which has helped me apply my business and finance knowledge outside of the classroom. While my upcoming internship in Dublin will not be my first ever internship, it will be my first internship abroad, which is both exciting and a little nerve wracking. However, I am really looking forward to this internship and believe that it will be extremely helpful for both my career and my work experience. This internship also gives me the opportunity to not only experience the Irish workplace and culture but also to live in foreign country independently. While I have traveled to other countries before, I have not been to Ireland yet and am looking forward to engrossing myself into the Irish culture. I also hope to use this internship to help determine what fields of finance and business that I would be interested in working in after I graduate from college. My previous internship was with my local soccer club in the sports business industry and that is a field that I am considering working in. However, I am open to many different industries and hope that my internship in Dublin will help make my career goals more clear.

For my international experience, I will be participating in Pitt’s International Internship Program in Dublin, Ireland. With this program, I will participate in a 8 week internship in the city of Dublin. For this summer I will be a finance intern for the Irish hospitality and events company Townhouse Leisure, focusing mainly on The Grand Social (one of Townhouse’s main venues). The Grand Social is one of Dublin’s most well known music venues and bars, and I am very excited to work there. I have always been interested in the music and entertainment business industries and am really looking forward to getting an inside look into how these industries work in a different country other than the United States. I also have been getting into more types of music and music styles and I hope this internship will help give the opportunity to experience and learn more about the music of Dublin and Ireland. I am also very interested to see how different the Irish workplace is from the typical workplace in the United States. This will not only help me decide what kind of jobs that I will look to work in after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, but will also help me determine what kinds of places that I will want to work and live in. Another reason why I am excited to work at this internship is that it will allow me to meet lots of new people. Many of my friends and colleagues are from the United States so working in Dublin will give me insight into how the Irish interact with each other and within different environments.

Outside of my school and career interests, I am really interested in music, sports, and movies. These are all areas that I am really looking forward to experiencing in Dublin during my 8 weeks living there. I hope that through my internships, I will be able to see and experience many different concerts and live performances in Dublin, which will be very exciting. For sports, I am very interested to see what Gaelic Football and Hurling are like, especially in Dublin. These are two of Ireland’s most popular sports and look very interesting. I am also really into the sport of football (soccer) and am looking forward to what the sport looks like in Dublin and Ireland. I also hope to catch some movies during my time living in Dublin, whether in theaters or at various film festivals. Outside of these interests, I am mainly interested in meeting lots of Irish people and living in the city. While I have been living in the city of Pittsburgh for college during the past two years, European cities are very different from American cities, and I am excited to see how different living in Dublin is. All in all, Dublin is a city that I have always been interested in experiencing, and I am really excited for this internship and the cultural and professional opportunity that it will give me.
