I just arrived in Dublin a few days ago. Since then, I have gotten accustomed to the new time zone and have begun exploring my new surroundings. During the IIP Dublin Program, I will be staying at the University College Dublin (UCD) campus. It is a very beautiful area with lots of greenery. There are also a lot of great amenities on campus offered to the students. This includes a grocery store, restaurants, bar, cinema, gym, and pool. Unlike the Pitt campus, UCD is not in the city. Nonetheless, it is very easy to get to the Dublin city center. There are lots of buses that pass through the UCD campus, and it is only a 30 minute ride downtown. I have been having a lot of fun exploring Dublin so far, and I am excited for my internship to begin next week.

For my internship in Dublin, I will be working within the Marketing industry. The company I will be working for is called DublinTown. DublinTown is a not-for-profit company that partners with 2,500 businesses in the city center to help enhance the economic welfare of Dublin. My role there will be working as a digital marketing intern. I will be responsible for creating and scheduling promotional content to put on their website. There are several important skills that I will have to keep in mind during my internship to ensure that I am successful in the marketing industry.
For instance, it is very important for someone working in the marketing industry to be flexible. As a marketing intern, I will be assigned a wide variety of tasks, and I will be promoting a diverse array of businesses. This means that I will have to be open to and willing to try lots of different things. It is crucial for a worker to be able to change with ease to unexpected circumstances.
Another critical skill is communication. It is essential to be able to properly communicate one’s ideas in the workplace. This includes in-person communication as well as over email and in video calls. Marketers need to be able to clearly and effectively speak with their coworkers as well as clients. Non-verbal communication is also a crucial skill to master since a lot of information is conveyed through our gestures and facial movements. This skill is especially important in my host county of Ireland. This is because, while the US is a high context culture, Ireland is a low context culture. This means that things are not said as directly in Ireland as back home. Therefore, I must adapt my communication style to better speak to my Irish coworkers.
Creativity is also a must-have skill for marketers. People working in the marketing industry need to be able to think on their feet and problem solve. If a sales pitch is not working, marketers need to be able to quickly think of a new, better idea during their presentation. Creative ideas are also key for making engaging marketing campaigns; the more creative the idea, the more likely consumers will remember it.
Marketers additionally need to be very attentive to details. Because marketers have to design many pieces of promotional content that will be made public, they have to be sure that everything is correct. For instance, one must be sure that they are using the correct spelling and grammar. It is also important to use inclusive language. The better a marketer is at noticing their mistakes, the more successful they will become.
An effective marketer should also have good interpersonal skills. This includes how marketers treat the other people that they are working with along with their listening skills. The more personable a person is, the more likely their coworkers will enjoy working with them. These interpersonal skills will also help you to establish friendships and mentorships.
Leadership skills are critical in every industry. This includes a person’s ability to direct tasks and complete initiatives. It is important for a marketer to be able to encourage their team. This skill is also essential to help further the career of a marketer. This is because it would make them into a better manager.
There are also several valuable technical skills for marketers. These are often referred to as hard skills. First, being a good researcher is very important. Marketers need to be able to conduct a lot of research on their clients as well as their competitors; this is essential for making a successful marketing campaign. Next, data analytics skills would be very helpful. This is useful for monitoring website performance. Analyzing the data from analytics platforms provides marketers with information to make improvements. To add to that, marketers must master Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This is used to increase the amount of traffic that is driven to a website. SEO makes sure that a client’s web page appears in the first page of Google search results.
Moreover, there are lots of skills that I will need to acquire in order to become a successful marketer. I believe that my internship at DublinTown will help me to learn these skills and, thus, provide me with a brighter future in the marketing industry.
