It is week 5 of my study abroad program and Florence is feeling like home. There were many things that I had to get used to such as walking on the narrow sidewalks and navigating around all of the tourists. Even more so, communicating with the Italians is something I have gotten better simply when ordering food and checking out at the grocery stores.
When it comes to Italy’s culture , I closely identify myself to their deep appreciation for art. I chose to study abroad in Florence mainly to take art classes, and I enjoy how my art history class exposes me to the rich art history that is saturated in Florence. It is most challenging to adapt to the time here, specifically when planning meals. Breakfast is not a huge deal here like it is in the United States and I adjusted by eating small snacks for breakfast like fruit or a pastry, while saving my appetite for lunch. Some restaurants also close during afternoon hours and reopen around 6 or 7 for dinner.
I also struggle to wrap my head around the fact that water isn’t free. During meals, they typically serve a large glass bottle of water for everyone to share ranging around 4-6 euros. The money quickly adds up with the cover fee, too.
When interacting with locals I try my best to be as nice and respectful as possible. I greet them by saying “Chao” and thanking by saying “Grazie”. I’m also very observant and try to replicate what other locals say or do.
While I am adjusting well to Italy, I can’t believe I only have one more week left!
