Dublin: A Look Back

Reflecting and looking back on my eight weeks working and living in Dublin, it is astonishing to realize how much I was able to do and experience in such a short span of time. The array of activities and events I participated in provided a rich and diverse tapestry of experiences that have profoundly shaped my personal and professional life. From attending local festivals and cultural events to exploring historical landmarks and engaging with the vibrant local community, every moment was filled with learning and growth. These past eight weeks have been incredibly beneficial in multiple facets of my life, creating a lasting impact that I will carry forward into my future endeavors.

Professionally, this internship has been a significant milestone, offering me invaluable work experience and a clearer sense of direction regarding the career field and path I want to pursue post-graduation. The hands-on experience in a dynamic work environment allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, enhancing my skills and confidence. While my initial focus was firmly on finance, my Dublin experience has broadened my horizons, making me consider integrating various aspects and fields of the business world into my future internships and career choices. The exposure to different business practices and environments has opened my eyes to the vast possibilities within the business sector, and I am now more open to exploring diverse roles and industries. This realization has been pivotal, encouraging me to seek opportunities that align with my interests and strengths, ultimately shaping a more fulfilling career path.

Academically, my time in Dublin has been equally transformative. Not only did it help me fulfill the six foreign culture credits required for my graduation, but it also played a crucial role in shaping my academic trajectory for the next two years at Pitt. The cultural immersion and learning experiences have inspired me to potentially take more classes focused on cultures and international studies. The firsthand experience of living and working in a different country has given me a deeper appreciation for global perspectives, which I believe will enhance my academic pursuits and overall understanding of the world. The rich cultural heritage of Dublin and Ireland has left an indelible mark on me, encouraging a lifelong interest in exploring and understanding different cultures. This newfound appreciation for cultural studies will undoubtedly influence my course selections and academic focus, providing a more well-rounded and comprehensive education.

However, the most profound impact of this internship has been on my personal growth. Although I have traveled to other countries before, this was my first time living independently for an extended period, reminiscent of my freshman year at Pitt. Just as my time at Pitt helped me break out of my shell and become more confident, my experience in Ireland has furthered this personal development. The challenges and opportunities I encountered in Dublin have made me more comfortable in a variety of situations, from navigating unfamiliar environments to building relationships with people from diverse backgrounds. While I have always been adept at making friends, this experience enhanced this skill by providing opportunities to connect with people from different cultures and age groups. The ability to build relationships with people who have diverse backgrounds has enriched my social skills and broadened my perspectives.

The most significant personal growth from my time in Dublin is the deeper understanding of myself that I have gained. Through the people I met and the experiences I had, I discovered more about who I am and what I want from life. This journey of self-discovery has been incredibly rewarding, and I am grateful for the way my time in Dublin has contributed to my personal development. I now feel more confident in being myself and am excited about continuing to explore and define my identity. This experience has equipped me with a stronger sense of self and the confidence to embrace new challenges and opportunities in the future. The memories and lessons from Dublin will continue to guide and inspire me, helping me navigate both personal and professional landscapes with resilience and optimism.

All in all, my 8-week experience in Dublin has been heavily impactful on my life and I am so glad that I decided to take this opportunity this past summer. I have been able to meet so many great people and learn so much about the culture of Dublin, how the Irish workplace operates, and more about myself, and I will always cherish and remember the memories that I was able to make during my 8 weeks stay in Dublin.
