New beginnings in Firenze

My name is Sammy Klebes. I am currently a junior at the University of Pittsburgh. I am studying supply chain management and marketing. I am studying abroad through CEA CAPA, University of New Haven, and am enrolled in Pitt’s global business institute, Florence. I chose this program and city to study abroad in, because of the beauty and history of Florence. From architecture to fashion to cuisine, the learning opportunities are endless. I also appreciate the walkability of the city. Florence has become increasingly familiar to me more and more every day. I hope to travel to as many places as I can in Italy, and through Europe. We so far have had the opportunity to go to Cinque Terre and Chianti as day trips. We even have a trip planned to explore Malta, a country south of Sicily. I hope to add to who I am as a person and gain valuable life skills and experiences to carry me through my future from this program.

Florence and Pitt are quite different, in my opinion, but there are definitely similarities that can be found. The crowded sidewalks of Forbes Avenue and the constant traffic flows have prepared me for the hectic scenes of Florence streets. The scenery of walking around Florence is unmatched. Outside of my apartment is the Santa Maria Novella Piazza, which is home to one of the oldest churches in Florence. Along with that, there are so many other great sights to see that we are lucky enough to pass just on our walks to class!

The location of our apartment is convenient, safe, and central. The living adaptation was somewhat challenging. I experienced intense jetlag the first week and a half and feel as if my body is just starting to adjust. The apartment style is very different from what I was used to back in Pittsburgh, while also acclimating to living with six other girls! Italian culture uses a lot less electricity than the United States, which has been something new. Entering into Florence with humid 90-degree weather and no air conditioning, was not my favorite. There is not much to complain about when you put into perspective where you are!

I am overjoyed to start this new journey of my college experience. It has only been two weeks, and I am overwhelmed in the best way possible. I am so excited for these next four months to see how it shapes me as a person.
