Hello, my name is Marc Huber. I am a junior studying finance at the University of Pittsburgh. I chose finance as my major because I come from a family that does not have any financial background, and I have always been drawn to saving every penny I can and financially planning my future. I hope that learning more about finance can lead to my future family learning more about it and breaking the cycle of not understanding personal finances. I transferred to Pitt last semester from CCAC, and I initially went there for my first two years of college to save money and to not go into as much debt. Since last semester was my first semester here at Pitt, I wanted to join some organizations on campus, so I decided to join Delta Sigma Pi, which is a business fraternity, and I am currently the VP of Fundraising. I also joined the Socially Responsible Investment Portfolio, which is a 100% student ran and actively managed investment portfolio totaling a little over a $1 million dollars of capital in socially responsible S&P 500 companies. I am in the healthcare and financials sector, so I specifically look at and analyze companies only in those two sectors.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, working out, watching comedy podcasts and standup clips, watching sports, learning about stocks and finances, trying new food, and trying new experiences. I have five siblings and a 5-year-old nephew, so I come from a big family and there’s always something going on. I am the fifth out of six, so I have a lot of older siblings to look up to and learn from, whether it be their successes or failures, they all helped me and guided me in the right direction. This summer I have a rotational program internship in Malvern, PA for a company called Siemens Healthineers, where I will learn more about finance, accounting, and supply chain for their company.

I chose to participate in this program because I had a lot of people tell me that I needed to try and do some sort of study abroad program at Pitt, and I thought this specific program offers so much learning and growth for students and it was unique. I did not have to give up an entire semester or part of my summer and I got to grow my business background while helping a great cause. I did not know entirely what this class was about or like, however, I am more than happy to say I made the decision to take it as I believe it is going to be a great experience, and it will be something I will never forget. Academically this program will help me learn through class and an actual hands-on experience with real actions. Professionally it will help me learn how to use business skills to make a difference, work with multiple groups and teams, build on skills like critical thinking and problem-solving, and work with a culture and people from a different part of the world. Personally, this falls right into my wheelhouse. As I said above, I like trying new experiences and this is definitely not something I have ever done before. I also want to travel, so this allows me to travel and explore a culture and the people of a country in a way that I would not get if I just went to Puerto Rico by myself.  To conclude, I am very excited to see where this project takes us and while I want to see the end product I know that I need to take this day by day to really do my best and get the most out of it.
