My Florentine Skillset

At this point, I am over halfway through my program! It’s crazy to think how fast it’s been going. I wanted to take some time to reflect on the skills I have developed during my time here.

For starters, my soft skills haved greatly developed from the start of my program. My organization and adaptability are two skills that have definitely been strengthened within my time here. Organization ties in with emotional intelligence, another skill I didnt think I would be developing so strongly. On each weekend trip we take, we must be organized to maximize our time to see the main parts of each city. Without being organized and well prepared, we would have a lesser experience.

Emotional intelligence is also relevant when traveling with people as you need to be very aware of your own emotions and the emotions of others to understand when to stop and regroup. This is a skill that I will definitely carry home with me as it is important in all walks of life. Adaptability has been the skill I have developed the most. It’s no surprise that I have had to adapt to my new city, culture, classes, and more. I am proud of my ability to jump right in even if it may be an uncomfortable feeling.

Navigating cross cultural situations has been super important here in Florence and across all travels. It’s crucial to understand the cultural background of each person and place I interact with. Many times people are curious about what were studying and what brings us abroad. It always allows for productive conversations about their own cultures as well. I have greatly enjoyed connecting with other students on our program and learning about what brings them here too. I have met people from so many different schools and backgrounds and learning of each individual experience is something I will take back with me.

I’ve learned to find comfort in feeling lonely or out of place because it shows how much I’m growing. I have become more independent and more open to trying new things. Being abroad and connecting with the Florentine and Italian culture has shown me that I am able to adapt into new environments.
