Pre- Departure Blog Post

Hello everyone! my name is Lilly Nesbitt and I am a student at the University of Pittsburgh. Tomorrow I start my International Internship Program in Dublin and will be here until July 19th! At the University of Pittsburgh, I a double major in law, criminal justice, and society, as well as media and professional communications with a track in professional writing. I am a rising senior and am interested in attending law school after college.

Towards the end of my sophomore year I had almost completed my law, criminal justice, and society major and was looking for another area of study I was interested in. Having always had the plan to attend law school, I never evaluated any other options in my track. When I discovered the media and professional communications major, I learned that I could take media courses that interested me, enhance my writing skills with the professional writing track, and learn the values of corporations which will be useful to me in my future career. For that major, there is an internship requirement in an area related to communications. Having taken a public relations writing class this past year and knowing I was attending a program where you could choose your area of study, I chose to work in public relations. I was interested in the mechanics of public relations, and the different areas of work that arise from it.

I am from Horsham, Pennsylvania, a small town in the suburbs outside of Philly. I come form a very traditional town, but in high school I was able to involve myself in media and digital courses. I knew when coming to college that I wanted to live a city, where I could be surrounded by people with different backgrounds as a contrast from where I grew up. The University of Pittsburgh was the perfect mix of a college campus and city vibes, with little neighborhoods that all and their own personality. Living in Pittsburgh has taught me so much and I have matured a lot since I started college.

For my internship, I will be working at the Irish Academy of Public Relations. I will be living on the University College Dublin’s campus, and will be working as a social media and marketing intern for the Academy. I hope to increase my skills in content creation and website management during this internship. This is my first official internship and I am also excited to be working in an area of my interest professionally. Having only worked customer service and hospitality jobs, I looking to improve my corporate relations skills for the future.
