Today we had an outdoor lunch and discussion with Tierra Thorne, a Pitt Business Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR), social worker, and the CEO of Blanket & Board. Before starting her business, she did social work with juveniles who were dealing with trauma. Knowing her background gave me great insight on how successful people all have their own individual paths which they take, and how they use their unique experiences for improvement.
Tierra began her business during the pandemic as a solution to a global problem. Since many families, especially those with elderly, couldn’t safely gather indoors, she brought celebrations outside, using sustainable materials like wooden forks and reusable picnic setups. I thought it was a clever way to make the best of a negative situation through the opening of her business, which also helped her community.
Furthermore, her ability to constantly adapt to the events going on and finding opportunities from them stood out to me. She mentioned that the NFL Draft will be in Pittsburgh next year, and how she’s already accepted into their partner program. Listening to Tierra speak made me realize the importance of flexibility, and the ability to act on an opportunity which not many people recognize.
