Ciao from Firenze!

Ciao! My name is Isabelle Hirschberger, and I am a junior in the College of Business Administration at Pitt, majoring in Finance with a certificate in International Business. This semester I am studying abroad in Florence, Italy through the Global Business Institute. I chose Florence for this experience because it felt like the perfect place to fully immerse myself in history and culture. The city has a balance of being deeply rooted in tradition, yet still lively and welcoming, making it the ideal environment to step outside of my comfort zone. When I decided to study abroad, I wanted it to be about more than just academics, but also what happens beyond the classroom in everyday life. By the end of this semester, I hope to have grown into a more independent and open-minded version of myself.

The university in Florence feels different from Pitt, but there a some similarities. Pitt has a large campus and a fast-paced feel, while my host university is much more woven into the city. Classes take place in historic buildings, making the city feel like part of what I am learning instead of just where I am studying. Both schools have strong academics and motivated students, but the atmosphere in Florence feels more personal and laid-back compared to the busy energy at Pitt.

My apartment is not located in the center of the city, which has made me realize early on that my experience might feel more local than most. My neighborhood is full of small businesses, families, and has fewer tourist spots. Many places I go do not have as many English speakers, which has pushed me to adapt quicker than I expected. The long walk from my apartment to the center of Florence, and my classes, at first felt like a lot, but it has become a comfortable part in my routine and an easy way to see more of the city. Stepping outside of my comfort zone more than I planned has helped me learn from locals in ways I could not in a classroom.

As I continue this experience, I am excited to keep learning not just through my classes, but through everyday moments that push me to grow. Living here has already encouraged me to be more independent, adaptable, and open to new perspectives. I am looking forward to fully taking in my time here and carrying what I have learned with me long after the semester ends.
