A Ferry Ride That Opened My Eyes

One meaningful moment during my global experience was taking the ferry across Sydney Harbour for the first time. It might sound like a simple, everyday activity, but it became one of the most memorable and meaningful moments of my time abroad. I remember standing outside on the ferry as we left the dock, feeling the wind and looking out at the water, and then seeing the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge come into view. It was one of those moments where everything felt very real, and I realized how lucky I was to be studying abroad and living in a completely different country.

What made this experience so impactful was that it was not a big tourist event or planned excursion, but just part of everyday life in Sydney. People were commuting home from work, tourists were taking photos, and friends were talking and enjoying the ride. It made me feel like I was part of the city rather than just visiting it. Everything felt new and a little overwhelming, the sights, the sounds, the feeling of being in a completely different city, but being on the ferry made it exciting instead of intimidating. That ride sparked my sense of adventure and curiosity, and made me eager to explore more, try new things, and embrace the unknown during my program.

This experience helped me realize how much more independent I have become. Living in another country forced me to step out of my comfort zone and figure things out for myself, whether that was learning transportation systems, adjusting to a new culture, or traveling to new places with friends. I also feel like I have become more open-minded and adaptable because I have met people from different backgrounds and experienced a different lifestyle. In Australia, people seem to have a really good balance between work, school, and enjoying life outdoors, and that is something I really appreciated and learned from during my time here.

Overall, taking the ferry across Sydney Harbour was meaningful to me because it captured the excitement and possibilities of being abroad. That first ride set the tone for my entire experience and helped me start my program with curiosity, courage, and a sense of adventure. It’s a moment I will always remember, both for the beauty of the city and the way it sparked my personal growth from day one.

Another beautiful view from the ferry!
